VAT registration

I am an ebay business seller and my sales are well below the UK VAT threshold so I am not VAT registered. ebay is now blocking me from listing any new items with a message saying I need to register for VAT and add my VAT number to my details? I don't want to register for VAT as I am below the threshold?!

You need to tell them that vat registration is voluntary if your turnover is less than 85,000 and that HMRC will not appreciate floods of unnecessary registrations. It is only compulsory if you are registered overseas and have stock in the uk. Then there is no threshold. I think ebay are being overcautious and misinterpreting the regulations.

Had to go on live help and they took the restriction off my account but I am wondering how many UK ebay businesses are going to get this warning when they try to list? ebay are making themselves a lot of work as there must be thousands of sellers in the UK who like me, are under the VAT threshold, and not VAT registered... This is second similar question about VAT I have seen in last 24 hours, so seems ebay is going OTT again!

That's good news OP, and I agree, there will be many many more sellers who get this message, causing a lot of angst and work for Ebay CS.
