You need proof of attempted/actual delivery,
does your receipt have 16 digit reference number, if so, put this into RM tracking website & see if attempted/actual delivery, ebay accept this as proof.
If no reference or not delivered, use POP to claim from RM for lost item.

Started a return 2 weeks ago and, having heard nothing in the interim from the seller (who sold me a dress with no label of any sort which was meant to be size 16 but had a 36" bust, which is a 10 or 12 according to the -alleged- manufacturer's sizing guide), I looked on eBay and saw I was meant to send the item back "by 30th October", so - as it seemed plenty long enough to have waited for a response - I posted it yesterday in order to speed things along. I've just remembered to update the return status as 'dispatched', but when I came to do that it asked me for a tracking number. It's been about a couple of years since I've needed to return something and I'd completely forgotten it needed to be sent tracked

I'm pretty sure that the page that I looked at telling me the date by which the return had to be sent DIDN'T mention anything about sending via tracked mail - if it had, it would have jogged my memory! Of course I got a proof of posting, but that butters no parsnips when it comes to entering a tracking no. on the return status

What do I do now? The seller seems to be a wrong'un as I now discover she / he has several instances of bad feedback for both bad communication and attributing wrong sizes to label-less items.

You should have opened a return case in the resolution center.

If your proof of postage as a number you could open a case now and try entering that.

Although you might be out of time for an ebay case but you could open a case in paypal.

Without some form of proof of return, neither Ebay or PayPal will help.

I've already opened a return case - that's what the first 6 words of my post allude to. Surely I have proof of return with the Post Office's proof of posting slip?
Hi tobiasd4, thanks for that. No, a POP doesn't have a 16 digit ref. no., sadly.

I contacted eBay just now, now their Customer Service line is open. I explained the situation and the advice was to contact the seller in a couple of days' time to ask them to mark item as received. CS said they couldn’t mark my item as dispatched on my behalf (curses!), even if I provide a photo of the Proof of Posting, as they don’t have that facility, but she said she would make a detailed note on my case so that if I needed to phone again in the event of the seller not playing ball (I explained the seller has previous negative feedback for bad comms), the next CS person would be aware of what has happened so far. Fair enough.

Ugh! This all reminds me of why I stopped buying clothing on eBay a couple of years ago ... same problem with wrong size according to measuring tape compounded by a seller with a bad attitude ... you'd think I'd have learnt ... SMH.
