Counter offer disappeared

I sent an offer to a buyer on an auction listing which at the time had no bids on it. The buyer then sent a counter offer which I left for a few hours to think about as at the time it said I had 48hrs to consider. When I came back later the option to accept the counter offer had disappeared and I could no longer send offers. The only thing that changed was that someone had now placed a starting bid on the item which was a lot lower than the offer I had received.

Would anyone be able to shed some light on why the offer might have disappeared. Is it because someone bid on the auction?

Yes. Once there is a bid the offer disappears

Would not be fair to have someone bidding and someone else come in and offer and get the item

If you want an item it is always best to accept as soon as possible. IOn this case it was a bid but it could have been another member making an offer. You could still bid with the other bidder unless of course you wanted it for less.
