Buyer lied just so he could return for free and I have now lost money - private seller

A buyer bought an item from me, the a couple days afterwards said it was faulty. (It was an Electric Vehicle charging cable. He said he had it plugged in all night and didn't work. I know it was working as it was used the week befor I sent it. After many many messages and trying to sort out via ebay (who basically took his side) they said I had to take refund because he said it wasn't as described. It was, he just used that as a way to get a refund. Eventually he agreed to pay the reurn postage and he also agreed (in writing on ebay messages) that he bought to wrong item. And what is ebays response....he gets a FULL refund including his original postage, so now I am out of pocket. The item was listed as no returns. But ebay don't give d*mn about me as a seller and presume is is correct even though if they read all of the messages they can see I am correct.

After nearly 20 years on ebay, I have decided never to sell on here gain. It is too expensive and ebay are jsut too difficult to deal with. Their customer service is zero. I can sell as a private seller (whic is what I am) on other platforms for free and find who buyers are before agreeing to sell. Why would I waste time on here with customer services who don't value me.

Bye bye eBay. You have had your day. You will soon go the way Nokia did.

Precisely my point! The Buyer knew that if he send it back as faulty he could use the ebay system to get a refund. He admits he bought the wrong item (buyer remorse, but knows (because he also sells on here) how to work the system.

While it is a shame that you are leaving I wonder why you consider eBay "too expensive". EBay's fees are basically about 12.8% + 30p if an item sells. This compares very favourably with any bricks and mortar auction house who add VAT and often use a buyers' premium. I have been on eBay for many years and have only had one problem where an item arrived late!

The buyer had obviously opened a NAD case and there is only one option that when returned he gets everything paid back. There is no way that you and he could alter that. He paid the original postage of course.

If you dealt with the "NAD" case quickly and without fuss you would get your fees back. Private sellers are not "required" to accept "returns" [for buying the wrong thing, wrong size or change of mind] but by not offering this - when the buyer would pay the return postage - the buyer is "backed into a corner" and opens a NAD case where you are charged for the postage; as you say. Sellers are protected from claims that a buyer has not received an item if they can show delivery by tracking [which is basically included in any 1st or 2nd class parcel] and that includes any situation where RM delivers to an incorrect address

@sail_the_world

EBay is unregulated, with members having no right to any independent appeal. EBay's user agreement requires us to accept their decisions on all disputes. EBay's stated priority is to provide a good buying experience.

Combine the above, and you have a recipe for eBay's institutional bias in favour of the buyer. I suspect a further factor is that if eBay turned down a case that was genuine, the buyer could sue them for failing to honour their money back guarantee. EBay doesn't give any guarantees to sellers, so the safe and easy answer is to give the benefit of any doubt to the buyer, and make the seller refund them.

EBay has become a very risky place for sellers.
