Buyer not returned item.

Hi.

I sold a washing machine to a buyer and delivered myself.

I put it on a quick cycle whilst I and the buyer were there. I knew it was working perfectly and the buyer seemed happy. About 4 days later l got a message off ebay saying the buyer wanted to return it as the pump was not working. The buyer never contacted me first, however l agreed to accept a return even though l knew the machine was working perfectly. It was only 12 months old.

Ebay issued them with a postage label? How can you do that for a washing machine??! And also are they allowed to do that without my permission and consent as l dont know how much they paid for the label? I would have collected it myself. That was almost 3 weeks ago and l still haven't received the washer and what l want to know, is there a time limit on a return and if and when can l close it?

Any help and advice would be appreciated.

You should have collected it yourself as soon as buyer created a problem. By not dealing with the return request yourself the buyer presumably escalated to ebay who sent the usual label (for 2kg weight). You only pay if the label is used.

You should arrange to collect asap, as buyer could explain to ebay that the label was not suitable and you could be stuck with a much larger bill.

eBay are known for issuing inadequate return postage labels which the buyer cannot use. If it is not used you will not be charged. If the item is not returned the case will eventually expire, in theory after 30 days but sometimes takes longer. You cannot close it yourself. eBay will not refund without proof of return. Hopefully the buyer has realised it's working OK and decided to keep it.

Or ebay refunding with the OP's money and the buyer keeping the machine.

I would have collected it myself, Johnbut ebay did not give me the chance! I contacted the buyer to arrange collection whom never even replied ( and Ive still not heard from him! ) but ebay just messaged me saying they had sent him a postage label!

Hopefully buyer paid cash, if so they shouldn't be able to open case.
