Indefinitely removed your ability to sell

Got the following email today:

Hello damianm1974,

eBay is built on trust, and we want our marketplace to be safe for both buyers and sellers. We reviewed your account because of concerns with your selling activity.. Based on our review, we've taken the following actions on your account:
- Indefinitely removed your ability to sell. You can't use other accounts or register new accounts to sell on eBay. If you do, your accounts could be limited, restricted, or suspended.
- Removed any of your listings. A list of any removed items will be listed further down in this email.
- All fees paid or payable for listings that are ended and/or hidden from search will not be refunded or otherwise credited to your account.

You can still bid on items, buy, and complete transactions you have in progress.

If you think we’ve made a mistake, or someone has accessed your account without permission, please contact us as soon as possible. To reach us, go to eBay.co.uk and click the “Help & Contact” link at the top of the page

I got that message, but it didn't say why. I have built this account up over 16 years and this makes no sense. Can you shed any light on this?

How? If it relates to selling activity there hasn't been any. I can't appeal at this point because I don't even know why this has happened.

I can confirm that I am not having a great day (though I was before this), and my appeal was seemingly rejected before I even made one. Due to COVID I haven't listed anything for nearly a year, so I have no idea what I could have done to warrant this. For the record, entirely positive feedback, no previous suspensions etc, above standard seller record and no outstanding fees/refunds.

Any ideas, as I am now being told that online chat is 'unavailable'?

Unless they've changed it recently eBay say they will always address you by your real full name, not your ID and that anything else is a spoof. Although live chat seemed to back it up they generally don't look into things very deeply so could be mistaken. Having said that, a spoof would normally contain a link they invite you to click on. Have you actually tried to list something? That would be the acid test of course.

Tried to list something and sure enough the restriction is there (i.e. I can't list). No question this is genuine as it was in my messages on ebay too - that was my first thought as well.

So much for their account security tips then. Odd that they haven't given a reason. I wonder if someone else has accessed or cloned your account. I can only suggest you try live chat again tomorrow. They're only as good as the person you get at the time so you might get more information next time. Best of luck.

Err, no. How did you come to that conclusion? I haven't listed anything for nearly a year, let alone anything 'not allowed'.
