I have seen an item I want to buy but when I go to checkout the price increases, I’ve been shopping through eBay for years and this has never happened. The seller says it is British vat being added is this right?

What Country is the Seller in? Are they using Global Shipping?

Yes that is correct it is Vat at 20%

It is happening to some buyers

I am not quite certain how it works but it seems to be that if the item is coming from a seller overseas not Vat registered or like it says below the item is in the Uk but the seller is not.

There used to be a £15 before any charges which has not gone.

From ebay policy

Starting 1 January 2021, eBay is required to collect VAT on certain orders delivered to UK addresses:

Orders up to £135 sent from outside the UK
Orders where the item is located in the UK, but the seller is not a UK seller

You'll see the VAT included in your order total at checkout, and you can view and download a tax invoice from the Order details page in your purchase History

I always click on uk sellers only and the item is being shipped from
England but I now think that they may be using this as a front.

Ebay has meesed up the coding, the price displayed by the seller is meant to include VAT but ebay seem to be adding it on again. They are even adding it to sales by private sellers on which no VAT is due at all.

Yes and that is exactly what what it is for

If you read my reply where on the ebay policy it says
• Orders where the item is located in the UK, but the seller is not a UK seller

It came in with leaving Brexit and make sure taxes are paid

It is to stop sellers avoiding our VAt taxes
My own opinion is
Perhaps that is why some items from China are so cheap they are not paying the taxes

caught out by an international seller pretending to be in the uk.
