'Reserve Not Met' should be discontinued, it just wastes everyones time. For example there is a nice van for sale and there have been 25 bids on it already and still not met the reserve price. After all those people bidding the reserve could be so high no person would have bid on it in the first place - As I said Reserve Not Met is a big waste of bidders time - or are there people sat at home with nothing better to do?

It's up to the seller what price they will accept for their vehicle.

Reserves are an expensive way of ensuring it doesn't sell for less, but it's the seller's right to use it.

This is what auctions are about. Sellers can decide what they want, buyers can decide what they will pay.

Sometimes an item sells, sometimes it doesn't.

reserve not met, is a waste of money for sellers, but I don't see how it it wastes a buyers time

place your maximum bid, if it is high enough and reaches the reserve the price jumps to the reserve and it will show 'reserve met'

if it doesn't reach the reserve you are free to walk away and find a different van to bid on.

the seller knows how much it wants for the item and has set the reserve at this amount,

Thank you for replying red_magpie. 25 bidders have already wasted their time bidding on this, if they want to sell the item why not just put the price they want like most people do? Then if it is too much it won't sell.

Just to add, The starting bid can be set to the least the seller will accept - same thing but bidders can see how much it is.

Do you not think "Starting bid" is better than "Reserve price" The seller sets the minimum with a 'Starting bid', same result but the bidders can see how much then bid or not

placing a maximum bid is the same whether there is a reserve or not,

you decide the maximum you want to pay,

placing a bid when there is a reserve means you can just walk away and bid on something else if your bid isn't high enough

placing a bid on an item without a reserve means you are tied to that item until the bidding ends, even if you are outbid, because the higher bidders may back out,

I know which I prefer!
