Stick to ebay process. When you get the item open a "not as described" return and you will receive a postage label paid for by the seller.

I won an auction around four days ago for a piece of tech that was priced much lower than buying it new. With buyer protection in place, it seemed like a no-brainer.

Today I received a message from the seller apologising, saying they’d just realised they’d accidentally sent me the wrong item. They asked me to contact them once it arrives so I can return it, and requested my address in order to provide a free returns label.

I don’t usually expect this level of honesty, which is reassuring, but I found it a bit odd that they asked for my address when they must already have it if the incorrect item has already been dispatched and is still in transit.

It may well be completely legitimate, but I wanted to check in and get a second opinion in case this is a newer type of scam.

Ok makes sense - however does that mean I won't actually get the original item I purchased I register it as a return?

Whenever you receive an incorrect item you should always open a proper return request on eBay. The seller will be able to issue a return label through that and doesn't need to request your address separately. Don't get involved with any return outside of the official eBay processes.

The address bit doesn't sound dodgy but returning the wrong item without using the money back guarantee system is not a good idea.

Replacements don't fit well within the system. Tell the seller you will use Ebay's return for a refund process and then buy again, hopefully getting the right item this time.

The buyer protection fee has nothing to do with this issue.

Just to add to the advice given, do not agree to a replacement , as this will not be covered under eBay's 30 day MBG Money Back Guarantee.

Always receive a refund through the eBay case, so you can buy the item again from this or another seller. Do not close the case early on any excuse or promise the seller may give , and do not forget to escalate if necessary.

just to also add...........when you receive the item (presuming it is definitely the wrong one) you MUST open a not as described case. The seller should send you a return label. IF not then escalate the case for Ebay to step in as soon as you can.

Do not try and sort things out outside of a case......just protect yourself
