topic Re: NOS - 'new old stock' - not really??!! in Buying

The item number you gave links to a Ford 2015 car stereo which does actually look like NOS, so I'm guessing you typed the number incorrectly but I get your point.

There does seem to have been an increase in NOS listings, perhaps over the past year or so, which may be down to a couple of factors: 1. Listing as NOS separates the item from 'Used' and attracts buyers, who may or may not be aware that what they are buying is more likely to be in good used condition than new, and 2. Buyers want a bargain, so a lower-priced NOS item is more likely to attract buyers than an identical item at the same price listed as Used.

I've noticed the NOS trick in one particular category of sunglasses which I collect: there are a couple of resellers who do it but one in particular buys up collections and resells them as NOS item individually. Someone I know got caught out and bought a 'rare custom-made' frame for something like £120. He then sent me a "look what I've just bought" photo buy wasn't too happy when I told him it wasn't a custom frame, it was an end-of-line frame worth about half what he paid. He went back to the seller who swore black was white that it was a custom job. Then he got a message from the original owner which proved it wasn't NOS...

The thing is you can't help everybody, kateybuns20. Look after yourself, others have to take responsibility for their decisions. There's no point in reporting anything because eBay really don't care: a sale's a sale, that's all they're bothered about. If a buyer doesn't know the difference between an item being sold as used in original box or NOS that's their problem.

Yes it's annoying to see and frustrating to watch genuine buyers getting ripped off by less-than-genuine sellers but, to a certain extent, caveat emptor applies.
