30 items a year

Is any one else stopping selling because they've reached their 30 item a year limit and don't want to disclose their national insurance number, personally I think ebay should pull the platform from the UK if the Government don't lift or remove this stupid bit of legislation, See you all in 12 months.

Don’t you think the data is safe with eBay? I must admit I was a bit wary but just gave it as I went over 30 recently and I still got a tonne of things I need declutterred so to keep selling you have to do that

Not trying to avoid paying tax but it's the quantity of 30 items not the monetary threshold that bothers me.

Thirty seems a pretty reasonable number for people selling unwanted personal items. OK it may be inadequate if you're moving or clearing a dead relative's house but all you've got to do is give them the number. Unless an individual item is worth more than £6,000 money from the sale of personal goods and chattels aren't liable for Income or Capital Gains tax.

I can't see a need to be secretive about ones NI number. Every employer you've had will know it and maybe even some companies to whom you've only applied for employment. Likewise various government staff, any of whom could be dishonest. e-Bay already have my bank details, which I'd be far more concerned about falling into the wrong hands.

I've always been told never give your national insurance number to a third party,they already have your name address and bank details, my issue is with the quantity not the monetary threshold.If I exceed the tax allowance then and only then should ebay need inform HMRC

I'm trying to sell my record collection of around 5000 items to supplement my pension most of which I will get about £3 for, its this Government there just not pensioner friendly. Its not Ebay I've got issues with.

Exactly: selling your own stuff is fine. What is being (rightly) cracked down on are fraudulent traders and the "It's not a business; it's just a hobby" brigade, who may or may not be declaring their earnings. Besides that e-Bay and similar can be used for other criminal activities.

If you're honest you've nothing to worry about.

I've been thinking it through and have decided that only HMRC and your employer are the only people that should have your NI Number not Ebay.

I usually get to 30 items by the end of April - though this year it's been a lot harder to sell anything.

I sold well over 100 records last year and the year before that.

You may find it really IS Ebay that's the stumbling block here, as they've added buyer fees and now Simple Delivery, so all your £3 records will need at least £2.72 tracked postage. Making selling them that much harder from a buyer's point of view. Even combining multiple sales to one buyer is a major faff now. And those obstacles have nothing to do with HMRC.

But, as Edwardian says, it's YOUR own stuff, so you are free to sell it all and there are NO tax implications.

The UK Digital Services Tax is something completely different to the UK digital sales reporting regulations (The Platform Operators (Due Diligence and Reporting Requirements) Regulations 2023). The UK Digital sales reporting regulations stem from the OECD Model Rules whereas the UK Digital Services Tax was implemented by the UK government independently of the OECD.

Tbf, they're not a million miles apart. There's a vast hole in the public finances and we know who's NOT paying their fair share towards it. So we end up asking others to help fill the gaps (like pensioners with an income just above the frozen income tax allowance).

if you sell a load of stuff and you pass the 30 items 1600 quid whatever threshold and they ask you about it and you say it’s all my junk what they gonna do? Tell you no it’s not ?🤷🏼‍

while you are correct . the diffrent forms of taxes the government takes basically is just theft and you need to remember that instead of shilling for the uk government

1. vat on second hand goods really tax already paid when new (theft)

2. all second hand items should face no taxes what so ever

3, remember taxation is just really theft and the government have not done anything for me to tax to begin with does not matter if its conservative or labour not a single one has bettered our lifes

4. import charges i face from overseas is insane they have no right to do this ( again on second hand items )

5. anything bellow 12.570 k is not taxable anyway ( unless seller has another job )

i say this as a business account and also have a private account

No, I didn't mean the personal possessions on Ebay. Those are fine. I've gone well beyond the limits for reporting and am not owing anything. The 30 item reporting thing is mostly just a distraction to keep everyone on their toes.

What I meant is if you receive a state pension you're practically at the limit of the tax-free allowance already. So if you have a few quid from your private one it could push you over the limit and you do have to pay. The longer the allowance isn't raised with living costs the more people will end up having tax to pay.

What's sad is it seems to be easier for govts to get everyone coughing up a few pounds more rather than plugging the massive loopholes where billions could be owed.

have some phobia about taxing the ultra rich

the ultra rich wouldn’t miss it either

in fact hundreds of billionaires have told the govt to do it !!!!

but alls a mystery to me in those higher echelons of money and flipping power

I’ll stick to my little life it’s more enjoyable hahahaha
