Recommendations or Advice

I do not want details of costs etc..............can find those out myself

Just wondered if other booksellers use The River, A-b-e-Books or anywhere else to list their books

online and if they would be prepared to make a recommendation/give any advice?

I gave up using ebay a few years ago after their last round of 'enhancements' to the system.

I use both Abe and the River successfully, but prefer Abe overall as it suits my stock more, although AZ is the place to go for selling text books, and titles of general interest. On the down side AZ's database is a nightmare, and many older editions of paperbacks in particular get 'buried' and cant easily be found in a search under title and author so are unlikely to sell.

I have just started using ebay again as I am selling a large collection of interesting and collectible books on behalf of a third party who is interested in getting rid, rather than maximising prices to the full. The results have been encouraging.

i still use ebay but i do not sell much nowadays, just surplus from stuff i have bought for my collecting, do find that specialist subjects put in the right category sells okay, not like it did in the glory days but hey ho everything moves on. I think the river is okay if you have masses of storage and the luxury of waiting for ever for something to sell, but i don;t have space so my surplus has to be moved on quite quickly.

I have books on Greenmetroplis, but it takes ages to sell one. You can talk and play games on there too.:-)

I used to sell on ABE about 7 years ago - and I will probably be moving back. The site is easy to use, though I believe they have changed the way inventories on Homebase have to be uploaded. The big advantage over this site is the international visibility - an advantage that seems likely to grow in the near future judging by the latest ebay email shot I have received.

P.S. You've got some excellent books listed and some of them should do well on ABE, but please push the ceramic sculpture out of the photos. Book people know how big books are; they don't need size guides in picture format. I can understand it on ebay but elsewhere octavo, quarto, folio in the description works.

I didn't presume the 'ceramic sculpture' was in any way a size guide.

As the seller is called "firecrest-bookshop-uk", a small sculpture of a firecrest bird in the photo

is a relevant and memorable logo.

If it works, then why not?

i am still waiting to see how the every item must have at least one picture not a stock photo will affect the megalisters, according to auctiva which i use for my listings this comes in on 1st july.

stock photos may no longer be used as
the primary photo for a used item listing,
but they can be used for refurbished
items. Catalogue images are acceptable,
but not as the primary photo for non-new
items; exceptions are the Books, Movies,
Music, and Video Game categories.
Video Game Consoles, however, must
adhere to the new standard.

For those that can't see it, here is the response from a Pink:

Sellers in the books, movies, music and video game categories are exempt from this standard so you can continue to use catalogue images when selling in the CD & DVD Categories and Books categories.

Same applies here, books will also be exempt, so you can continue to list with catalogue images in these categories.

So, as I suggested would be likely when the changes were announced, mega listers will still be able to use stock photos from the catalogue.

(Oh, and I'd just like to point out that it was easier to ask 'can I', rather than 'will the megalisters be able to' - so although Alan is telling me, I can still list like that, I won't be! :))
