His mum Gerty Badger, his dad, Boris Badger, and his annoying little twin sister Badgers, Holly and Thistle Badger, all lived there too. &nbsp;High above, in the branches of the old oak tree, lived Sally the Squirrel and Olly the Owl. One day, Barney was snuffling and snorting along the forest floor, looking for some juicy worms for his lunch. Suddenly, Olly the Owl swooped down from his perch high in the oak-tree.&nbsp;"Twit-too-woo," hooted Olly." "Barney, I've been looking for you everywhere!" &nbsp;Barney looked up startled,, his eyes catching sight of Olly flapping excitedly around his head. "Why Olly? What's wrong?" Barney stopped snuffling and looked curiously at Olly as he contiuning his hooting.&nbsp;"Barney! You're the last to know as usual! Mr and Mrs Mole have been kidnapped by a horrible red fox, it's up to us to save them!"&nbsp;"Oh no!" exclaimed Barney, "Quick, call Sally Squirrel. We must find out where they are!"&nbsp;"Calm down Barney," hooted Olly the Owl, "According to Herbie the Hedgehog, this horrid fox has taken them to his lair under the old empty barn near Farmer Giles' field."&nbsp;"I know, " interrupted Barney, "Why can't we disguise ourselves, go down there in the dead of night, whilst the fox is out hunting and rescue them."&nbsp;Just then, Sally Squirrel bounced down from her tree and pointed to a large mound of earth. "Look," she squeaked, "That's where that cunning fox kidnapped those poor moles, look, you can still see his paw-prints. Herbie the Hedgehog saw them being dragged away!"&nbsp;There was a rustling noise and a large prickly-looking hedgehog shuffled out from a hollow tree-stump. &nbsp;"Herbie!" the animals shouted! "H-h-h-hello," sniffed Herbie, wiping the tears from his beady little eyes. "It was terrible! Those poor moles never stood a chance. That wicked old fox barked and snapped at them. They tried to run away but they're so short-sighted they just ran into his paws!" &nbsp;The shock was too much for poor Herbie. He gave another sob and then curled up into a tight ball. The other animals gathered round to comfort him.&nbsp;"Hooo, hooo," said Olly the Owl, "I have a plan and because I'm an owl, it's very wise! Horace the Horse is a friend of mine. Let's ask him to carry us on his back to the old empty barn after dark tonight. Meanwhile, Barney must speak to the field-mouse family amd tell them to nibble a hole in the side of the barn big enough for us to crawl through." "Hoorah," snuffled Barney. Sally the Squirrel was so excited that she dug up some nuts she had just buried. (Cherryl the Chihuahua and Nitasha the newt stopped by for long enough to get a mention in the story.) A few hours later, Horace the Horse stood at the edge of forest snorting nervously. Barney the Badger and Sally the Squirrel were perched on Horace's back, clinging on for dear life. Sybil the Snail and Norris the Gnat had gathered to see the animals off on their rescue mission. Off Horace galloped, with Olly the Owl flapping his wings as fast as he could to keep up. Over hedgerows and walls they flew, until at last they reached the old empty barn. Olly the Owl gave two hoots and the field-mice came running. "We've nibbled a small hole," they squeaked, "But Barney will need to make it bigger." Barney leapt down from Horace the Horse and scampered over to the hole with Sally the Squirrel bouncing along behind. Just then, Barney spotted a large red bushy tail behind a wall. "Eeeek, hide in the shadows," whispered Barney hoarsely. Olly the Owl, who by this time was perched on an old tractor, started to hoot loudly in warning. Barney and Sally hid behind a combine harvester just in time to see the evil glint in the fox's eye as he came past with a snarl wrinkling up his long snout. Barney could feel his heart pounding. His nose began to twitch, the straw next to the barn was starting to tickle and he almost sneezed! The fox looked round and then slunk off into the shadows and ran off to raid the next farm's chicken-shed. "Phew, that was a close one," said Sally Squirrel nervously. "Quick, lets rescue the moles!"Barney started scrabbling with his powerful claws, widening the hole the field-mice had made in the wall of the barn, and soon it was large enough for Barney to scramble through with Sally Squirrel in hot pursuit. There, cowering in the corner, trapped in a cage under a large trailer, were Mr &amp; Mrs Mole! "Mr &amp; Mrs Mole! We've come to rescue you!" called Barney excitedly, as he swerved to avoid a large bale of hay toppling on him. The moles were too frightened to speak, but they started pointing to a spot behind Barney and Sally.
