Mini webcams - why so cheap?

I've often hankered after the idea of buying one of these mini webcams where as you type you can see the person you're sending stuff too and vice versa, but they were about £50.00 + when they first came out. Now they're as cheap as chips and seem to be a lot smaller, too. But the thing is, you might have yours all set up but unless the recipient has his/hers set up at the same time, it's not going to work out, is it? So surely I'd have to buy my cousin in Australia exactly the same one as I'd get so that he'd be able to install his and leave it switched on as well. Most of the ones I look at are now under a tenner.

Have any of you had them/use them, and are they all what they're cut out to be, or are they a nine day wonder and all fuzzy. Does it depend on the resolution - i.e. does it have to have a high pixel number, and is it difficult to set up. When it comes to IT the average fourteen year-old would leave me streets behind.

Doesnt work like that Fred

most laptops/notebooks etc have them already built in

your cousin doesnt need the same one

doesnt matter what kind they have so long as they have one

most will be plug and play too

soon as you plug it in, your computer will detect it and it will automatically start up the install screens (the ones where you click next etc)

the higher resolution, the better quality the picture will be

like all technology, expensive when its a new idea

now, as most are built in, and they've been around for years

they are much cheaper

they are VERY easy to use

once installed, you will have an icon on the desktop

probably bottom left where your volume is

and you just click it

you should put a sticker over it when not in use

or turn it to the wall

they can be hacked like the built in ones

It might also be an idea to check your settings (and flash cookies) here
