Ironing water.

Yesterday, whilst doing a spot of shopio, I noticed something that stopped me dead in my tracks. Ironing water!! I have never heard of anything so ridiculous. It came in (yet another) plastic bottle 😡😡😡. How can any sane person actually waste good money and contribute to the never ending tide of plastic by buying this stuff?

i remember as a child, watching my Mam, as she sorted the washing out. She would have a bowl of water handy, and each item of washing would be taken off the line, sprinkled liberally with water, and then folded or rolled up into a little parcel to keep it slightly damp, ready to be ironed later.

Ironing water! Grrrrrrr! It seems these manufacturers will go to any lengths to produce stuff that they then try and convince us we really need. I despair...

All I can say is that if your water makes the kind of mess of your iron as ours does over the kettle element then perhaps they have a point, but I agree that there is no need to have yet more plastic packaging!

Was it "De-ionised" water, water you use in steam irons?

I don't know if it was de-ionised or not, but I think it was intended to go in the iron. I put ordinary tap water in my iron, and I don't have any problems. It just took me back to watching my Mam making little parcels of washing, ready to be ironed. She didn't have a steam iron..indeed, when I was very small, she used those heavy black cast iron irons that had to be heated on the range. I think she actually liked using them, because she used them for a long time after electric irons became available. I can just imagine her comments regarding 'ironing water'!

it's just distilled water used in battery's or irons if your that way inclined

My Mum used to do that too. I use a water filter jug, so my iron gets filled from that. No lime scale in the kettle or the iron. They will make anything that people are daft enough to buy - and some people are daft enough to buy anything.

Distilled water and de-ionised water are not the same. De-ionised water has all the minerals filtered out.

I can understand some of your reasoning but I don't believe it is quite such a ridiculous purchase as all that.

Some of the more modern ironing appliances can be very temperamental and need more care and gentle treatment than the old fashioned ones, plus many areas have such hard water that ironing water, whether it be just distilled or de-ionised actually protects the appliance and helps get a longer life out of it. In effect saving you money by stopping you from having to buy new appliances quite frequently.

I understand that ...some areas have hard water. But does the water have to go in the iron? Surely it would be better to sprinkle the (tap) water directly to the ironing? If I couldn't put the water in my iron, I would keep a spray bottle specifically for the job, and spray each item as I iron it. No need to buy a new plastic bottle as comes with the 'ironing water'...keep the same bottle for the job. And if tap water is too hard, then save some rainwater.

I think I am of the same mind as Petal..I wish I had all that time back that I spent ironing tea towels, pants, socks etc. I know that when I am about to pop it, I won't be thinking ' I wish I had done more ironing'!

I get round that very easlily, I don't and never have ironed those things. what a waste of time.

😀😀..I totally agree! But when I got married, I did things the way my Mam did them. She was a proper Welsh Mam and she ran the household with military precision. It was a long time before I learnt the art of whittling..reducing the ironing pile down to basic necessities.

What a con for water with a bit of scent and definitely something that we do not need in another plastic bottle.

I hate Ironing.

Best not to wash stuff then you don't have to iron it
