Whatever party one votes for, it is ESSENTIAL to have a good, sensible, coherent opposition. The LAST thing I want as a democrat ( as in a believer in democracy ) is a one party state. The opposition, in its way, is as important as the party a person votes for and at the moment; all these events happening together, are creating the perfect storm. Sure we'll survive, but survival is a bare minimum requirement.....happiness requires a little more.

We have a representative democratic system where we vote for an individual not a party.

In the States they have a party political system where voters register as supporters of a particular party and can take part in the selection of candidates - in the UK we have no say in who a party selects to represent them - party candidates therefore owe their first loyalty to the party and not the electorate. Party member MPs represent their party first and those who voted for them come a distant second.

I won't be in the least bit upset if the Labour/Consevative/LDP/UKIP or any other party tears themselves to bits - it is fitting that in the case of the Labour Party problems are being caused by their leader who is sticking to his declared beliefs and views and is being 'loyal' to those who voted for him rather than bowing to the wishes of the party.
