Retail giant Asda has advertised a job for a Liverpudlian after rivals Morrisons snubbed the town in its search for "working class" actors.

Asda says it is searching for a presenter with a strong Liverpudlian accent for their instore radio station.

It comes after Morrisons was criticised for controversially listing a casting call for working class people which said people from Liverpool would not be considered for the role.

The calling notice said: "They should be proper working class people but not at all like the people from Benefits Street.

"They should NOT sound or look posh and we should skew towards northern accents. And nobody from Liverpool please."

Morrisons attempted to distance themselves from the row by blaming acting vacancies website Casting Networks Inc who apologised for the "unverified posting".

But their rivals Asda, who have two stores in the city, now want only a Scouser as their new presenter because of their typically "warm, passionate and friendly" accent.

I have no idea where Sir Art is Astro, he would have been in his element with the Brexit debate but I guess he may be recovering from a slapabotomy.

The ONLY acceptable accent should be the English accent, one whom anybody can understand. I don't know the man's name but the newsreader for the BBC's Home Service was perfect where he spoke crisply and clearly: "This is the BBC Home Service, here is the news..." I could listen to that man all day. But you get some egocentric like Billy Connolly who gets all excited when telling his own jokes at eighteen to the dozen, by the time you've worked out what he's saying, he's five jokes on. I couldn't listen to that man for five minutes - he'd need a subtitle/translation board.

The Oxford accent - if it is indeed an accent, is easily understood by all, as is the Rhodesian accent. Ian Smith could be understood without any problem. Nobody had any problems understanding what our wonderful late Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher - G.R.H.S. was saying either. There was a time not so many years back when entertainers would take elocution lessons to try to rid themselves of their north country accent. Unfortunately things have taken a turn for the worse with the emphasis being on the north country dialect, the heavier the better.

"Ooh, listen to me - I'm a Brummie, Glasweigen, Manchurian. Aberdonian etc."

I'm glad to say I have no accent.

Maggie Thatchers accent ???? MSRIH

She originally spoke with a Lincolnshire accent (which resurfaced when in full rage mode later on)

She had a weird 'put on' semi-posh accent when at Uni

Then on entering Politics, started to copy the Queen/BBC accent

In the run up to Her being pushed for PM, She was tutored to moderate Her affected accent for the TV

Even now Hearing Her speaking makes Me want to be sick, in any accent

Billy Connolly - should sound exactly like myself - he was born and brought up on the West side of Glasgow (He went to school & later worked near where I lived). Billy Connolly was a Folk singer, a special breed. He Has a weird amalgamation of various West coast accents, to sound More Scottish.

Please remember the Media seem to think We all sound like Elaine c Smith - She's not even a Glaswegian She comes from Coatbridge, which is more akin to Glasgow East End accent the one used for Drunks, Thugs & junkies on TV and in Film

But it is funny how people ALL AROUND the World can understand Billy perfectly well, but some people down South can't, wonder whose fault that is.

btw - The West of Glasgow accent is the one that is picked as favourite for the telephone, newsreaders etc etc -

The worse call to a Company I made was to SKY, I couldn't really understand what the Girl was saying - India or somewhere else exotic, No about 20 miles from where I now live, SKY Livingstone (W Lothian)

My ex-neighbour who was Welsh (South) had a beautiful accent - He ranted about the version of the 'South Welsh' accent that proliferates on TV (originally from an area of Cardiff I think)

Inverness has supposedly the clearest accent in the whole of the UK and is even more 'Correct' than Old BBC English

The most cringwothy & annoying accent by FAR, in the whole of the UK is The South London accent (& Grammar) used now, by the Young, be they White, Black, Asian, Jewish, Chinese everybody

It is spreading fast all over the Capital. It was not that long ago people were worried about the spread of 'Estuary English' Croydonesque among the Young.

But what we have now is a whole Generation who speak as if they are Yardies/Wide Boys from Jamaica and 'Estuary English' is viewed as Posh to them.

Fred, you might have an accent, but are not aware of it.

My mother was from Hull, but lived in Bristol for 60 years.

I never noticed her Yorkshire accent, but others did.

I always thought that I didnt have an accent, until I went up North, and people kept asking what part of the West Country I am from.

Possibly because I picked up some Yorkshire from my mother and some Bristolian from my father.

Hmmm, mildly disappointing. My comments were intentionally way over the top, expecting to be slated on all sides, but it didn't happen.

I knew Margaret Thatcher had an affected accident and that many people couldn't stand her - that's why I mentioned her to wind people up, but I was very real when it came to Billy Connolly. I genuinely can't understand two words he says when he get's excited, telling jokes. A Birmingham accent is acceptable as is a general Welsh accent although they tend to put the emphasis on the last letter of each word. My sister picked up the same dialect when she moved up to Bangor many years ago. I lived spent and worked in London which has, as you say, become a mishmash of every dialect under the sun. The east London and Essex accents tend to be sharp and unforgiving. My accent is impossible to place because I have lived in Cyprus and everywhere else during my childhood - I hate hearing myself on tape. The "real" me sounds nothing like what it sounds to my ear. If you hear yourself on tape you'll not recognise yourself.

Finally it was a rather daft thing to come out with though - no Liverpudlian need apply - they've shot themselves in the foot on that one!

I'm originally from Coventry and consider my accent fairly flat, nothing like Birmingham which is only about 20 miles away, but people from outside the area always confused the two. Now I live in Gloucestershire which has a wide variety of accents ranging from rural (the locals) to RP English (the moneyed 2nd homers) and everything in between. Occasionally I still get asked if I'm from Birmingham.

Absolutely correct in what you have said. Over the course of her reign of terror she effected more faux accents than Rory Bremner, each one infused with her customary nauseating ' whining' inflection.

The very sound of her name makes me want to throw up, let alone the sound of her voice.

A ghastly, insidious woman.

I don't think I'll ever get rid of my Dutch accent. After 24 years living here you can stil hear it and it's mixed with a Manc accent. I must sound lovely.

I have no problems understanding Billy Connolly.
