Oh dear.

Looks like Cameron has made a BIG mistake by trying to bully broadcasters and the other political parties into dropping the TV election debates.

The BBC, Sky, Channel 4 and ITV have today written to Cameron, effectively calling his bluff and telling him in no uncertain terms the planned debates are going to go ahead – with or without him

And No 10 have responded saying they are disappointed with the broadcasters decision.

Cameron may live to regret digging his heels in.

Who on earth does he think he is?

Before all this kicked off I wasn't fussed either way as to whether the debates happened or not, but now I really hope the broadcasters stick with their decision and it is chicken dave who either has to back down or watch the other debates without him from his comfy sofa at home.

That's a pity. It would have been fun seeing him wipe the floor with the ragbag of assorted Marxists - Miliband, Sturgeon, Bennett - but I guess he has more important things to do, running the country.

I think the whole idea of these supposed "debates" is farcical.

They're not debates at all, they're opportunities for rabble to mouth off, interrupt and attempt to shout down whoever's speaking.

A proper debate is where points of view are discussed properly and with civility, ie, debated!

Couldn't agree more.

And the one Cameron has agreed to do would be 90 minutes with 7 party leaders which would work out to approx 12.5 mintes each to speak.

I think the public have a right to see a tv debate between the only 2 people who could be the next PM,as Cameron said of the TV debates in 2010:

“I’m absolutely delighted that this is happening.
“I think people have got a right to see the people putting themselves forward as our next prime minister and to see the choice … and make up their own mind."

And again facing then PM Gordon Brown across the despatch box:
“Does the Prime Minister agree that the time for live television debates at general election times has now come?
“Will he agree to hold television debates with the leaders of the main political parties so that people can see us discuss the issues, the policies and challenges for the future of this country?

Bwaaaak bwaaaaak!

CD,the debate was to have been between Cameron and Miliband,just the 2 of them facing each other with no script

I hate these so-called TV debates. All they do is reinforce the party political system and encourage the attribution of 'presidential' status on potential PMs.

Good on Cameron for not joining in, even if his reason for not doing so is not the same as mine.

We do NOT have a president deciding policy, at least we shouldn't!

Maybe he thinks that by giving motorists an extra ten minutes parking time, nobody will notice the vacant lecturn at the debate. In order to appear that Milliband is not debating with himself, perhaps they could place a tub of lard where Cameron should be standing. Or a deep fried chicken wing.

I don't want to see any politicians "debating" anything.

Because they're not really interested in the subject of the debate. Only, in how many points they can score off each other.

Its all a load of baloney (?) It would only make any kind of sense if they all got together, say 2 months before the election date and have a full debate on all the important topics of the day. All records would be kept as to who said what about which subject and then, 3 moths after the election, when all the dust has settled, results could be tested and all the pre-election promises made prior to the election tests by various parties could be checked up on for honesty. There would then be a series of tests laid out for the future.

For instance ........

1 ... 1 infringement equals .... Out of politics for 1 year for that person.

2 ... 2 faults equals no appearence on TV at all for that person in any political cause.

3 ... 3 faults equals being totally booted out of politics for ever. No matter what the party is.

That should get a few honest ideas up on the pedestals

Oh!!! .... and no more liars up on the stage to give us mere mortals the wrong ideas just before election time and then have the real party leaders show up just before election time to take over. That would be a straight Number 3. lol

'David Cameron could be given his own election programme if he refuses to show up for televised leaders debates, it was claimed today'. To meet strict impartiality rules during election campaigns, the BBC is considering giving Mr Cameron his own show in return.
