How many more shows and programmes are we going to have to see about WW1??

Have we not had enough yet?

I appreciate that enough needs to be made of it to ensure that it never happers again. I also see that enough needs to be shown of the sadness that it brings to people's lives.

But enough is enough. We know that the Germans, under Hitler, was a tricky sort of chap to deal with but, by now, we've got it.

It was made clear at the start of the year that there would be a scheduling of WWI related programmes throughout this centenary year and so I'm never surprised when I see one.

No real problem for me as I can decide to watch them or not bother, and there's a couple of hundred other channels for me to choose from so not an issue.

I appreciate that there are a lot of programs about WW1 at the moment, but as has been said; this is remembrance Year of the outbreak of that War. If only 1 second of your life was spent remembering each life lost, it would still take a month to remember each and every individual who died. Now, in this day and age, I don't know if people think a life is worth a second of their time, but personally; I don't think it's a lot to ask.............and as has also been said, there are other channels and other programs.

I don't mind the programms about WW1 (yes, I watch some of them), what I do mind is the News being overwhelmed with references to either ceremonies, forthcoming ceromonies, excessive mention of forthcoming programmes or complete and utter twaddle from "reporters" and "our such-and-such a reporter/editor/correspondent".

Whilst on the subject of the News, it's annoying that before the news starts, there's a long précis of what's coming, ten minutes of "our top story", after another 5 minutes of "other news" there's a re-cap of the first 15 minutes and "still to come", another précis of what's yet to come and when the News ends, there's yet another re-cap!

Today it was all about some actor or other who'd died. He was someone I avoided watching and I just don't see why a re-cap of some of the parts he played should occupy the major part of the News. The news was, he'd died, sad though it was, finit.

The BBC is obsessed with acting and actors and even the newsreaders have to get in on the act. Why the heck do they have to get up from the desk and pose "just-so"? They're reading the news (often badly too) that's all.

May be that actor made us laugh and for a brief moment in time he made us forget about the bad world out there. As a kid i loved Mork and Mindy, with his Na Noo na noo catchphrase, thats why we remembered him, the actor, the comedy he give all while fighting his own demons, so give me that news over some rouge country bombing the **bleep** out of defencless palistinians anytime. BTW his name was Robin Williams.

Pete, if you use that criteria to determine what constitutes "news" then "The News" should be completely about such people.

It's fine for the news to be completely biased on the side of those countries and people who state that their avowed intent is the complete destruction of Israel is it? They also deny that Israel has any right to exist which can't be right?

Leaving aside bias and commenting as an observer only, I see countries next to Israel constantly attacking first and then I see condemnation of Israel when they retalliate. Why is that? Are they supposed to just accept the rocket attacks and the sneak raids by terrorists who take pot shots at people in their country and stand idly by when those terrorists sneak back to their lairs to hide themselves and their weapons amongst the ordinary civilians?

If you see a Lion sleeping and go and poke it with a stick, you shouldn't complain when the Lion jumps up and mauls you?

Which news is this then?

The trouble is the "Lion" has been mauling the Palestinian people and stealing their land for years because God told them to,Woe betide anyone criticising the Israeli's and their mass slaughter of innocent people,theyr'e either labelled rascist or anti semetic,Groups of Israeli's were actually moving chairs and sofa's to the hills above Gaza,cheering when israeli bombs and missiles rained down death on helpless Palestinians,what sort of mindset is this?

Groups of Israeli's against the war were banned from marching in Israel,what chance peace when you have an openly rasict government intent on anhialation of Palestinians,At least Sayeeda Warsi in our own government had the guts to resign in principle over this,surprising to find a politician who believes in anything other than their own career and bank balance

Maybe we should all be forced to watch the programmes about WW1 to understand just how bad war is ....

It would appear that humans as a race have not learned from past experiences ....civilians are still being killed under the most horrific circumstances ......soldiers too of course , some no more than children ....just so sad...

Before you start "blaming" Israel for this that and the other, a bit of a look at the history surrounding the territory might throw a bit of understanding on the situation?

Just look at the relatively recent history of the last 100 years and see what went on over that time? Moving on to only 65 years or so ago to the end of the British Mandate, the civil war and the declaration of Independence by Israel, the Green Line established and what's happened since then?

Terrorists began doing what they're still doing today ie infiltrating Israel, killing civilians and soldiers then melting back to where they'd come from.

Without warning Egypt, Syria and Jordan attacked Israel and were a bit miffed when Israel managed to defend itself.

As if that wasn't enough, a bunch of countries (plus the PLO) joined forces and continued to have a go for a couple of years. Then the PLO continued the conflict from the Lebanon eventually continuing on and off for 20 years or so.

Not content, the Palestinians continued to fire rockets at Israel and people did what they're doing now = blaming Israel for fighting back.

Every so often, the situation escalates (as it has just done again) and Israel retalliates then people criticise Israel. Israel are not fighting an enemy who dresses in a uniform, draws battle lines and faces Israel with their weapons. No, they hide amongst the population and make sneak attacks from advantageous positions so is it any wonder Israel got a bit cheesed off with it and seized those positions in order to remove those strategically important positions from those who continued to attack from there?

It's quite OK for terrorists to rain death and destruction on the Israeli people from the safe haven of civilian areas but it's not OK for Israel to try stop them? It's tragic that innocent people are getting killed and injured but it's up to those surviving people to stop the terrorists within their society from carrying out their wicked business and not support them in any way.

If you are talking about the six day war in 1967 the only war that Egypt, Syria and Jordan fought as allies then maybe you need to read up a little!

The war started with Israel launching surprise attacks on Egyptian airfields before any formal declaration war was made.

When the Japanese launched a surprise attack against Pearl Harbour President Roosevelt declared December 7th 1941 as, "a date which will live in infamy"!

Yes, please do read up and see what had happened before Israel struck.

Egypt had moved their troops close to the Israeli border and threw the UN peacekeepers out of Sinai and Gaza. The PLO had been raiding Israel from their positions in the West Bank so the Israelis struck back. The Syrians had been bombarding Israel from the Golan Heights so Israel struck back at them.

What would anyone else do if it was clear they were being attacked from two sides and were expecting to face attacks from a third side and probably a concerted attack from the three sides? They'd done nothing except live in their land so it was clear they had to do something against the continued surprise attacks from two sides and had they not returned the favour would have suffered an attack from a third (side).

What happened six years later? Not having learned from the previous war and the continued years of conflict in concert with Jordan and the PLO, Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack at Yom Kippur.

So it's gone on ever since. Things go "quiet", nothing happens then out of the Blue one of the protagonists attacks Israel then bleats when the Israelis strike back.

As to the destruction of Israel, Ahmadinejad (of Syria) said "......if the smallest and briefest chance is given to regional nations they will destroy it." (IT being Israel).

Anyway, for those who're continually condemning Israel for realliating, it's a bit like this?:-

You've lived near a family with whom you've never got on and with whom, over the years have had several skirmishes. You break a window in their green house, you get away with it so do it again. Nothing happens so you go and break half a dozen windows, they complain, you laugh. Then you break another half dozen and make several rude gesticulations.

So the other family come round mob-handed and not only break all the windows in your greenhouse, they flatten it and kill all the plants inside and for good measure break all the windows in your house. You then go round moaning about the destruction they caused, omitting to say what you've done to them over time!

That sounds reasonable but you omit to say that the neighbours also move the fence line so that your greenhouse is now in their garden - not only that but they object to the building of a tunnel so that you can get at your ripe tomatoes!

You forget that the fence line was moved because the trouble-making neighbours used to stand on the high bank between you to smash the windows and not content with smashing the greenhouse windows, after the fence was moved they tunnelled in to the rest of your garden to steal your produce and get closer to your other greenhouses so they could smash those more easily.

Getting back to what the thread was originally about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I have not watched all of the programmes but i think its an important part of our history and lots of people gave their lives and did their duty for the place of their birth!!!!!. I respect that and its a shame a few more programmes like that are not on to make younger people see what real life was about. Imagine half of the sorts we have around today being called up suddenly to fight in a war!!!!!!. Do them Bloomin Good!!!!!. Take their minds of Benefits and what their going to spend them on,,when to have their next BABY!!!!!,,, or where to get the latest lot of Smack!!!. There would be a B****Y GOOD SHAKE UP THEN!!!!!!!!!!
