I must agree ...at the end of the day teaching for me was a vocation ....i absolutely loved my job and the hours were irrelevant ...

I was one of those teachers who turned up at 8 am and left at 6 pm ( school was locked then ) . I went on courses ( after hours , weekends and in holiday time ). I LOVED my job ........

I lived in Harrogate for many years ( a conference centre ) and one particular time I saw a lot of delegates who were quite unlike anything I had seen before ...quite a scruffy bunch .I was curious and spent some time investigating to see what particular section they were representing . To my absolute horror this scruffy bunch of individuals was representing me ! They were the elected representatives of my very own union .....

To this very day I cannot believe that these people represented me ...I never once voted to take industrial action ..would never do do yet it appears that a few members can actually determine that action take place. It is more about the members that actually vote to do so ......some members take no part whatsoever...a non vote from a member who is apathetic is a vote lost......

As stated I loved my job but decided at this point that should there ever be a confrontation between my job and my union then I knew where my loyalties would lie ..........

It would appear that in percentage terms those who voted to strike represented a minority of the actual members .......the criteria needs to change. For a strike to have real value the numbers voting to strike should represent a majority of the actual numbers eligible to vote.. In many cases many members do not bother to vote ....a minority do so but their views can predominate due to the apathy of those who do not bother to vote at all....

There is something wrong here ...it need s to be changed......

Get into schools and teach our kids, fed up with the double standards, you ARE on good money and good pay and pensions, god knows how many weeks a year holidays, you can afford to take your kids away on holiday out of term time, I can't,. any of you who went on strike today should look around in the playground and count yourselves lucky !

Well said.

You know the cheeky sods at my daughter's school sent me a text saying she was required to go in today for a couple of hours for concert practice and then a performance this evening. So they close the school, have us running around sorting out child care etc. and then have the cheek to expect us to arrange things to suit their concert. **bleep**!

I WAS a teacher ( thankfully not now ) and never ever agreed with strike action ....never went on strike ..

Always took my own children on holiday in term time ( no option to do otherwise ).

It would appear that teachers do get long holidays and shorter days but in fact a teachers day does not end when the pupils go home and much of their " holiday " time is spent on preparation and on school premises ( mine certainly was ) ,

However EVERYBODY has been affected by the recession...everybody has had to make sacrifices ...my own retirement date has been moved twice .....

I no longer teach .......it sapped the life out of me.......but my first priorities were always the children .....

Considering they are Teachers, I find it a bit depressing that they still haven't managed to grasp the basic mathematics; as to just what a mess this country is in....financially. Now I understand that people NEVER like to take the medicine, which is required to rectify a problem, but to actually want to put the people back in power, who presided over the problem, is depressingly stupid. In mitigation, it is galling ( to say the least ) when people, who didn't actually directly cause the problem, are told they must "tighten their belts" ; while those who did, are still picking up 1 Million Pound bonuses.

I don't blame teachers for defending their own corner but don't expect me to feel sorry for them and don't expect me to hold back with the criticism when their actions effect myself and others.

Yes they work hard and I believe all the stuff about how much holiday they get is a bit of a smoke screen, but they still do OK, are comparatively well paid, have good pension provision, a comparatively secure profession but basically some don't seem to appreciate how well their bread is buttered!!!

Try experiencing being made redundant several times over the past 10 years then spending time in contract work and temp jobs with no pension provision, minimal holiday provision and barely a living wage!

Finally we need to get over this idea that public sector employees should be put on a pedestal and regarded as some sort of super heroes who are the lifeblood of society. Teachers, Nurses, Firemen etc., yes they may provide some good services but at the end of the day it's a job, their job in their chosen profession. I've worked in industry dealing with the maintenance of the sewerage networks, I bet people in that industry would get much sympathy if they went on strike but people would soon moan when the sh!t hit the fan!!!

Just like Millielilac above, she is having the life sucked out of her. She is a good dedicated teacher, but is on the point of quitting. One of the biggest problems is discipline..the lack of. She is abused on a daily basis, but can't do a thing about it, and gets no support from her Head. They may be well paid, but no amount of money would be enough to make me do the job that she is doing. Education in this country is in a real mess.
