Totally opposed to the principle of a charge being made to make an appointment - totally in favour of fines for those who don't keep an appointment.

Studies have shown that instead of having notices stating how many patients have failed to attend for their appointments, saying how many have attended on time will reduce the number missed and if the patient is asked to write down the appointment time themselves there can be as much as a 20 % reduction.

A simple thing which could save £32,000,000.

What a preposterous idea. I can see the logic in perhaps charging a patient maybe £5 for a missed appointment - though how they would put this practice into effect to recoup it is another matter - but to actually charge people to see a Doctor is absurd at worst, and a hare-brained scheme at best.

I thought we DID pay and that it was called nation insurance contributions, there was a day when they were supposed to be earmarked for the NHS; while other general taxation was for other things. I'm just trying to work out what the other things are, because it's not: building Houses, fixing the Roads, putting light bulbs in street lamps, Giving legal aid to little people trying to fight the state or multi conglomerates, employing enough Soldiers, Police, Nurses, Doctors, etc. etc.

Silly me, I just worked it out...........it's for running the Westminster free for all and keeping them ALL in a manner to which they have become accustomed..............sorry, how could I have forgotten that, must not have had My thinking Head on.

I suppose if enough people went to the A&E instead of their doctors because of this, they'd soon knock it on the head.

My Grandmother died in the early 50s still owing the Doctor for pre-war care for her children. Luckily the Doctor gave credit to his patients - he didn't die rich!. The NHS was invented to provide free care to everybody who needed it. It is just that medecine and needs have changed over the years to basically unsustainable levels.

As to missed appointments - sort the system out first. They recently cost me half a days work, 3 hours of parking and a lot of frustration(son) because the cancellation letter arrived after the appointment! Son has 2 appointments with the same consultant a few weeks apart - no he hasn't but even the booking dept do not know which is the right one!.They changed their computer system in the department which is how the mix up occured but haven't sorted the dual appointments out yet because they are not on the same system.

Then there is the brilliance. Son was on the list for a brain scan. Got a phone call, late one afternoon, could we be there in half an hour - no sweat. They had a couple of cancellations and were ringing round not in order of how long you had been waiting but distance from the hospital. Somebody promote that young lady, please.

I would and could not pay this.

To me it looks very much like lets keep the working class going donating to the national health service via national insurance but do not let them use the doctors so they will die off and leave it all to us the rich to use. We can replace the working class via their offspring who will continue to keep us in the manner we have become accustomed to.

Pensioners, working class, people who are at this moment in time living hand to mouth in this country, finding it difficult to pay bills and keep a roof over their heads lets make it harder for them by denying them access to doctors through charging them.

Yes a caring government ! NOT.
