They were so half cut they wouldn't have had a clue what they were drinking! Or if you're really cynical, He didn't want to put His money into the kitty like the rest of them!

In actual fact, although not mentioned in the first first of the four books, it was Christ's first recorded miracle. I used to think what a pointless, thing to do, but it goes far deeep than that. If you read the story carefully, you will see that this was witnessed by humble servants, not by those in higher places who thought they knew all the answers.

So why did Jesus do it?

The real reason behind the miracle was so they would understand what was to be. What Jesus was saying was: "If I can do this to water, tasteless and bland, just how much more can I do for you, if only you'd let me?" These people were uneducated, unlikely to be able to read and write. That was why He told so many parables, so that the humble would be able to digest what was being explained to them on their terms.

The same goes for the Beatitudes: Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. The will, and do indeed. Whereas a multimillionaire is surrounded by castles and palaces, that is as far as he can go. He is a prisoner of his own good fortune, destined to spend the rest of his life trying to earn more money and making sure that those who wish to take his good fortune are kept at bay. Whereas the meek have nothing to tie them down. They are free - free to wander wherever they want with simple needs. Half of us are tied up with mortgages, and will be for the rest of our lives. Get some wineo - if he wants to spend the next four months i, Eastbourne, he does just that.

one theory i read was that Jesus on seeing that the servants/slaves had only water he insisted that they were given wine.hence he changed the water into wine forr them.over the following years this changed into a miracle

Water into wine ? Well he fed a multitude with five barley loaves and two small fishes, so a flagon of water into a bit of cheap Blue Nun shouldn't be a problem.

Tesco, Brother Fred. £31.50 for a case of 6, or £5.25 per bottle. Now you can't say cheaper than that.

One disadvantage though. They've changed the shape of the bottle, so you will be unable to convert the empty bottles into nice little table lamps. Nothing stays the same, does it ?

Long time since I've tried it. What I found went down very well was Cloburg Laski Reisling. Just about right.

What I do have a lot of trouble finding is Elizabethan Mead. Half the kids serving in supermarkets haven't even heard of it. There are places that sell it, but it comes through the post and by the time you mess about with all that, it's quite an expensive affair. In the end I settle for ginger wine, a poor substitute. You used to be able to get it in proper off licences, but they're drying up fast because of the supermarkets.
