It's a difficult one, EMB because people are always so quick to blame the police and social services when reports of child neglect and/or child abuse are not properly investigated so... I quess they are stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to dealing with these type of reports.

I blame the old busybody who reported the mother in the first place - surely they could see that the mother was just taking her well-cared for child out of the house for a bit of fresh air and exercise?

Yes Lola, it's nice to see the nose-poking, interfering, busybodies with nothing better to do, are alive and well and wasting valuable police time. Had they just had a word with the mum, they'd have discovered that she had the child's coat in the car, and so saved all the furore.

I accept that the infant has a ruddy face, but some children display that complextion whatever the weather.

Exactly..if I was that worried about a child, I would strike up a friendly conversation with the mother to put my mind at rest. I wouldn't just ring the police.

Anyway, I'm sure that a bracing walk along the seafront was much healthier for the child (and the mother) than sitting around in a centrally heated house all day breathing in dust particles!

Quite correct Lola, and I think the piccies in the editorial were taken at a later date for the press photo shoot, and not what the kiddie was wearing at the time of the incident.

Its a difficult call....

As a nursery teacher there were the odd children who would turn up dressed inappropriately for the weather ...thin clothing in the winter but of course the staff in this instance could have a quiet word with the mum ...and would do so .

Its not as easy with a complete stranger . The mum stated the child was wearing tights , leggings a vest and a fleece ....and to be honest if I was out at the coast in the winter I think that I may be cold too. The child is only 9 months old so would not be able to express if they were actually feeling cold ...they certainly looked a little cold in the picture provided for the press photo.

The mum has just been shown on the news and in this instance the child is wearing a padded suit ....probably much better for bracing sea weather....

It may be that it does seem a little heavy handed that the police were involved but it was the childs welfare that was being considered ...and that is paramount ....

The child may have been too young to express if she was feeling cold verbally but I'm sure she would have shown her distress in other ways by crying and shivering etc.

Also she wasn't just sitting in a pushchair getting cold, she was running around which would have kept her warm. My face always goes bright red in the cold even though I am actually as warm as toast - some people just have that kind of complexion.

Clearly the police didn't think there was a problem but I totally agree that the childs welfare is paramount...sometimes, though a bit of common sense wouldn't go amiss.

Why on earth did that woman take her child outdoors?

Surely she should have kept it inside, filling its face with unhealthy food and making it watch TV or video games all day?

No wonder Britain is broken when women don't even know how to bring up kids these days.
