VAT - Apparently Scotland is now Non EU!
Summary: karij1980 discusses an issue where eBay continues to collect VAT on their sales despite having removed their VAT registration due to selling less. They contacted customer service and were told it was due to their location in Aberdeenshire being considered non-EU. jonatjonatjonat and sml192 suggest that the eBay agent might have been incorrect about the location's impact, and it could be related to leftover information indicating VAT registration. fargvs mentions that such remnants are difficult to completely erase from accounts. karij1980 needs to provide proof from HMRC to verify their UK registration status, while confirming a suspicion that the agent provided an incorrect reason.
I've recently removed my VAT number and updated all my listings as I sell a lot less on ebay now, nowhere near enough the 90K threshold.
Just made a sale and ebay still collected the VAT. Spoke with CS - long story short, it was because of the item location. I am in Aberdeenshire.
But apparently, this is now classed as non-EU and ebay are allowed to collect the VAT. I asked them to check a map of this location, but the agent still insisted it was now non -EU!
Has anyone had this issue?

OP1 month agoApologies, I've only just re-read what I wrote! I meant to say that ebay class Aberdeen as not in the UK!
I now have to get proof from HMRC that I really am registered in the UK!

·1 month agoI don't think they do. You just got someone on the phone who picked any reason as to why VAT would be collected.
It wasn't the correct reason - but they were just hoping to fob you off with a reason.

·1 month agoComment only - From similar posts over years, it seems impossible to completely remove all evidence of original VAT registration with reversion to non VAT registered status --- remnants will remain in the account and appeals to HMRC have generally been unsuccessful.

·1 month ago · EditedHave you actually deregistered for VAT with HMRC and provided eBay with proof of this?
Where was the item being sent to? Scotland and the rest of the UK are not part of the EU (European Union) so if it was being sent to an EU country then eBay are required to collect and remit VAT.

·1 month agoI'd say the issue you've got is the agent simply didn't know what they are talking about. I've no doubt there is a reason they are still collecting VAT - its mostly likely not the fact you are in Scotland - but more likely they just made up a reason just to give you a reason - regardless of whether the reason was correct.
Looking at your listings - they still state that '"I provide invoices with VAT separately displayed."
I wonder if somewhere - it still assumes you are VAT registered. How easy it will be to get someone to actually help you at ebay - slightly harder question.
