Model is not allowed as a variation specific" – any way to rename the variation attribute on a live listing without losing sales history
Summary: nexgensm98m is seeking advice on how to update the variation attribute named "model" in their eBay listings without losing sales history, following a change in eBay’s policy. They express concern about renaming the attribute, as doing so normally deletes the variation grid and affects existing sales records. They inquire about the possibility of using Seller Hub, File Exchange, or the Trading API to rename the attribute while retaining the sales history and ask if "Phone Model" or "Compatible Model" would be acceptable new names. They seek insights from others with similar experiences.
Hi all,
I sell phone cases on eBay UK (category Mobile Phone Accessories > Cases, Covers & Skins). My multi-variation listings have two attributes: Colour and a custom one called "model" (values like "For iPhone 15 Pro Max"). They've been running for a long time with plenty of sales.
Since recently, any attempt to revise these listings – single revise or the bulk editor in Seller Hub, even just a price or stock change – is rejected with:
"model is not allowed as a variation specific."
I understand eBay has now reserved "Model" as an item specific name, so the variation attribute needs a different name. The problem is how to change it:
In the listing form, changing the attribute name wipes the variation grid, and because units have sold I get "attributes and options can no longer be removed".
Sell similar / end and relist would work, but I'd lose the item number and with it the sales history, watchers and search placing.
So my questions:
Is there any way inside Seller Hub or via Reports > Uploads (File Exchange) to rename a variation attribute in place on a listing that has sales?
Has anyone done this through the Trading API (ReviseFixedPriceItem with ModifyNameList)? The docs say it's allowed regardless of quantity sold – does it actually work, and does the sold history stay?
For the new name, is a custom label like "Phone Model" safe, or does eBay expect "Compatible Model" here?
Any experience or pointers appreciated – I have a lot of listings in this position and would rather not rebuild them from scratch.
Thanks
