Worrying message
When I turn my phone on just had a large 'black' message on my screen regarding allow or don't allow live activities on my eBay account. Is this a hoax or something new that I don't know about? This just pops up when I turn the phone on and not when I visit eBay. I have checked my messages and there is nothing there regarding this. Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

What you describe sounds more like a legitimate iPhone permission prompt than a hoax, especially if it specifically said "Allow" or "Don't Allow" Live Activities for the eBay app.
Live Activities are an iPhone feature that lets apps show ongoing information on the Lock Screen or Dynamic Island (for example, package tracking, order status, or delivery updates).
Apps such as eBay can ask for permission to use Live Activities, often after an app update or if the feature becomes available for a particular type of notification.
These prompts are system pop-ups, so they don't appear in your Messages or email.
The fact that:
it appeared as you unlocked or started your phone,
it mentioned your eBay app,
and the choices were simply Allow or Don't Allow,
is consistent with a normal iOS permission request.
If you're unsure whether it was genuine, you can check:
Open Settings on your iPhone.
Scroll down to Apps > eBay (or just eBay if it's listed directly).
Look for a Live Activities setting. If it's there, you can turn it on or off yourself.
Also check Settings > Notifications > eBay to review its notification permissions.
When to be cautious
It would be more suspicious if:
it asked for your password or banking details,
it contained spelling mistakes or odd wording,
it appeared inside a web browser rather than as an iPhone system dialog,
or it tried to pressure you into acting immediately.
Since you mentioned it only appeared when turning on the phone and there was no corresponding message, it doesn't sound like a phishing text.

Yes it was asking accept or decline and did feature brief details of a item that I left a bid on.
You have reassured me. I was naturally worried as this was the first time that it had appeared and took me completely by surprise.
