Simple Delivery - Funds on hold

I sold and posted a DVD box set on the 17th of August 2026.
Evri failed to deliver Thursday and today Friday saying they will deliver Saturday.
I used eBay simple delivery for postage.
The buyer has filed an item not delivered and says he wants a refund as he wanted DVDs for this weekend.
EBay say ‘Sit back and don’t worry we will handle this as you used simple delivery’.
Then next email says my funds are on hold for the value of item I sold.
I’m confused : If ebay make refunds for lost items in the post, then why are they freezing my funds?
Note: Yes I know the item will arrive Saturday or Sunday and case will be auto closed.
Yes the item only has a value of £9.02 but in future I plan to sell and post things worth several hundred pounds. So I need clarity on if eBay handle refunds via simple delivery from their funds/insurance or am I liable still?

·3 weeks agoThis has always been a great annoyance for me. Yes, we know some buyers lack common sense (or patience), but why does ebay allow buyers to open an 'item not received case' so soon after purchase / dispatch. They usually end up with a refund and the item they bought ultimately arrives. Even when sending abroad it happens ! The predicted arrival date given by ebay is a whole other problem, that contributes to this.
In all my years of buying, if an item hasn't arrived, I will contact the seller out of courtesy after a couple of weeks and only open a case for not received after three weeks. We have a whole month to claim for a refund if something is lost.

·3 weeks agoGlad your cash was released. I have no idea why it was frozen then quickly released but I think "messy and confusing" is probably a valid description of ebay these days. :(

OP3 weeks agoUpdate: Now eBay have released the funds a few minutes after freezing the £9.08.
Why freeze the funds then immediately release them?
Very messy and confusing for sellers.
