Refund taken out of my account before it was in my account
Summary: A participant, 0131jojo34, experienced an issue with an eBay transaction where they canceled an order and noticed their account was emptied to refund the buyer. They expressed concern about not seeing the buyer's payment in their balance and were unsure about the extra funds taken for the refund. **peaseblossom** explained that eBay processes refunds by taking from the seller's balance or an external funding source. sml192 assured that the buyer's payment would eventually be released to 0131jojo34. Further clarifications by marco@ebay confirmed that no double refund would occur and the original payment would arrive in 0131jojo34's account. eBay customer support recommended waiting 24 hours for resolution.
I had just under £200 in my E-Bay account. A buyer bought 22 items totaling well over £300.00
they paid but I was not too happy with transaction so cancelled. I did not see it on my e-bay balance.
The cancellations went through but now my e-Bay is account is empty.
The have refunded the customer in full from my account.
The Customer is getting their money back plus the money that was in my account.
Will this resolve itself it in 24 hours or am I now wrapped up in E-Bay red tape.
I should add that I did get a QR code before cancelling the sale.

·1 week agoIt's how ebay does refunds. They take from the seller's balance or funding source but you will keep the buyer's payment when it clears.

OP1 week agohi thank you for replying,
but as the transaction is cancelled and the refund was more than in my account which is now 0.00 will the buyers payments reach my account because there will be no proff
of delivery and I have had an email saying they have been refunded.
The refund was more than I originally had in my account. Where did e-Bay take extra refund from?
I have been in contact with E-Bay, very quick response there! they told me to wait 24 hours, I thought I might have too. I will update in 24 hours.

·1 week ago · EditedYes, the buyer's original payment will still be released to you.
If there were insufficient funds in your eBay balance for the refund then the remainder should have been taken from whatever external funding source you have set up (bank account or debit/credit card).

OP1 week agoThanks.
What a way of doing things. I actually had over £300 in my account, my buyer paid over £300 for 22 items. A couple of hours later I was not too happy with the request to pack everything (Doulton and other fragile items) in just two parcels to save postage.
I was willing to use 14-15 parcels with 14-15 QR codes and give a full postage refund for each one plus more for multiple buys.
I packed three things using the two QR codes and tried to cancel the rest of the sales. But this cannot be done.
So I had no alternative but to cancel the whole sale. I have not sent the parcels with the QR codes.
The fun begins.
E-bay refunded the buyer their over £300 before his payment landed in my account. My account now 0:00.
I'm thinking buyer now has a full refund + what was in my account and the balance coming out of my credit card.
Contacted E-Bay, had a marvelous time wrestling with A.I. before both of us got bored.
Managed to get an E-Bay human (female,) who was very helpful and said all would be resolved in time 24 hours. (I left 5 stars feedback)

Hi @0131jojo34 , thanks for your post.
Just to clarify, the buyer doesn't receive 2 refunds/payments. The funds taken from your balance will be the only money back they will get and that is to cover the payment they issued for the transaction.
The payment they originally issued while it might not be in your account yet, it will hit your account eventually, and that will make up for the deducted funds from your balance, and of course it will not be reversed to the buyer, we don't issue double refunds.
Thank you,
Marco

OP1 week agoEverything back to normal. Now realise how system works.
Thanks again, especially to the female clerk at E`Bay who has probably dealt with this before.
I lost an over £300 sale, no problem, I'd rather lose the sale than have to refund because items broken in post.
I wanted buyer to generate 14-15 QR codes, they would have got a full postage refund. They paid for two. I could not pack safely 12 Doulton dolls in one parcel.
