How do you list anything bigger than 61cm? Part two.

Haven't had much time on this yet but first attempts with this new listing format today is like this to get back to your own carrier who will take your large/small items, (preview works, not tested with listing):
Still start with over £750 - £800 is easy enough.
Weight - go to 40Kg as this will be above the 30Kg DHL will supposedly take when they come on board soon.
Dimensions - put these high enough to surpass the DHL 120cm x 80cm x 80cm size limit.
This ensures that the package is oversized.
At the end is an option for cash on collection - who knows if this will work in practice?
The annoying part is having to create postage policy and payment policy now.
Anyone up for trying it out - I haven't got time to find something to list right now to check it out for proof of working - family business taking my time at present. A bit of a faff around again😎

Add primary service - up to 4 possible. Buyer pays or free again, you can include your packaging in the cost here:

·3 months agoI'm a private seller and I have been trying all day to list a sound bar that I want to sell. It's only worth about £40 but it is 66cms long. Unfortunately ebay simple postage only goes up to a medium parcel with a maximum length of 61cms. When I click on the block marked 'package size' it only lists small or medium parcels with no option for anything bigger. I tried the workaround above by increasing the weight to 40Kg (its only 2Kg) and putting in the correct sizes, and increasing the buy it now price to £800. I was then opted out of simple delivery and I chose my own carrier (parcelforce 48). I then went back and reduced the price back to £40 but the listing page then said it was revising my postage options and it reverted back to only being able to use simple delivery up to 61cms as before. Is this because I'm a private seller? and if so then how is a private seller able to sell any item that is over 61cms long on ebay? If this is now the restrictions they are imposing then it cant be anything else but goodbye to ebay from me and all other private sellers on ebay wanting to sell something over 61cms long. Why should the selling price change anything? Or am I doing something wrong?

After not getting much help on here and spending time trying all of the workarounds suggested on here by entering higher weights, larger sizes, and overpricing with none of it working, even trying to list the item as free delivery, I have found one way that has worked! I simply changed the category from the one the soundbar should be listed in (computer desk top accessories) to Home Audio >Speakers and subwoofers and immediately I was given the option in the ‘select postage pop-up box’ to select an oversize item, and choose how I want to send it. This allowed me to bypass the previously enforced simple delivery limitations.
For me it now seems obvious that this 61cm enforced limit is dependent on the category the item is listed in. What high IQ boffin at ebay has decided that no desktop computer item can ever be more than 61cms long? (And has probably put similar size limitations across many other categories).
I hope this works for any other private seller who is having problems listing an item that is over 61cms long.

·9 months agoIf rick's methods aren't working it's because you haven't created a postage policy. If you can't find how to add a postage policy, it's because you haven't opted in to business policies.
Here's where you opt in to 'business policies' as a private seller:

You can then create a postage policy from there.
I set mine to use Parcelforce and set the price to £15. When I looked at the listing, eBay had changed this to £18. I have no idea if this is a 'Buyer Protection Fee' (seems oddly round if so), a bug, or eBay choosing to take £3 because I didn't want to use Simple Delivery.

·11 months agoNot sure if eBay has made another retrograde change or there's a glitch, but I am now unable to edit the delivery/postage after listing. It just has an empty space after the Delivery heading, no option to change between postage-only and postage+collection, for example! This is same for all my items.

OP11 months agoYou have to click on the near invisible 3 dots next to the postage policy box to add/edit postage policy.
The workaround was done in a rush so that did not get specified and it was too late to edit it.
Those 3 dots mean nothing to most people - there is nothing anywhere to suggest that they are a menu! Same as these weird symbols that people use all over modern technology instead of a box with text in - I don't know what they mean 99% of the time and have to click on them to find out their function and pray that I don't sign myself up to a 100 year contract receiving frogs legs or something!

·11 months agoYou create Postage policies in your Business policies. You need to Opt-in to Business Policies first. If you are not familiar with them, you might be spooked by how it looks, but if you don't like it, you can Opt-out (top right of Business Policies page).
You probably don't know it, you already have business policies. You see them once you Opt-in. They don't get changed when you Opt-out. That was my experience anyway

The workaround doesn't work for me, sadly. The reason being that there is no option to create a Postage Policy - that bit just doesn't exist on the listing page for me.

·11 months agoI apologise for that. I repeated my test a few times and it failed each time. In some cases it accepted the smaller price but it reverted to Simple Delivery if you went back into edit something.
I didn't mention that I changed the weight to 30kg and size to 120 cm, then "Add primary service" and I selected Yodel 48 for £12.
It is very fussy about what you change the price back to, and the way you go about it. As you enter numbers into the "Buyer will pay" field, the page responds dynamically. I was able to get it to accept £30 by first entering £830, doing the above, and then deleting the 8 and saving. Like I said, you lose it again when you go back and edit.

·11 months ago1. In my tests, the weight only needed to be above the RM limit of 20kg. But I misremembered what you said and put 30 instead of 40 in my post.
2. I also tested with postage policies, but that made no difference. Whatever works only gets changed back to simple delivery if you later edit the item. In the case of a postage policy, the edit page says "Simple Delivery will override your domestic postage policy." I have opted out of business policies anyway.
3. I don't know what your crystal ball's saying about DHL, but I don't use them because their website is too complex just to get a quote.
I have yet another twist to all this. Whatever clever method we come up with, eBay might override it without our knowledge anyway, and we ultimately have to call eBay support!
While listing an oversize item 74 x 49 x 27 cm, Yodel's quote was cheapest at £12. I successfully listed it on 9th June https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/127166301027 and the viewed item showed £12. Each day I checked my active listings and it clearly showed £12 (not flat rate). When it sold on Fri 8th August the buyer somehow purchased RM standard delivery for £6.65 (and expected the item to be collected on Sat and arrive by Tuesday). On Friday, I contacted eBay and they were able to fix the problem and switch to Yodel 48 at the lower price of £7.69 and promised to refund me the full postage cost. The buyer gave a +ve review but blamed the late delivery on Yodel's Monday collection instead of eBay.
Sure enough, when I later looked at the original listing for the sold item, it showed with £6.65 standard delivery and £7.69 express! (allowing express is another gripe about simple delivery)
So I clicked on the "Sell a similar item" and it shows the Oversized option and Yodel 48 @ £12 (you need to switch to Postage only) and it is listed as such! I can only guess at how the original item was changed by eBay. You can probably see the same if you sell my item.

·11 months agoThe workaround I use for oversized items is to sell them on the social network for collection not ebay.
Failing that if maybe ebay want you to cut the item to size.
Best practice is to take a photo after you have cut it up to avoid buyer disappointment.

·11 months agoThe custom/advanced option only appears automatically for certain selling categories, which is baffling. For example Speakers & Subwoofers where I wanted to list a crossover circuit for want of a more suitable category. The annoying thing I would've preferred simple delivery but it wasn't an option.
If you want to shop oversize or custom, then the solution at the top of the page worked for me. Temporarily change the value to £800, then you get the option to specify the size.

As I said before - screenshots would enable me to see what you are doing wrong. A blank "neither works" is of no assistance to permit me to understand what you are doing.
They do work, myself and numerous other people use them. They have even been given out by Customer Service as a solution when they don't know how to do it themselves.

·11 months agoIf it helps anyone I just spoke to customer support about this because the workaround didn't work for me. They said I should use simple delivery, ensure that only Evri was selected and choose the biggest size available but the correct weight. They said Ebay have an agreement with Evri that Evri will accept items over the size limit (we'll see when the auction ends)

·6 months agoI was having doubts also after a couple of failed attempts, but Rick's workaround does still work.
I think the key is ensuring you have both Postage and Payment policies set up: www.ebay.co.uk/bp/manage
I also seemed to have to edit the postage policy within the listing to get the custom postage value to stick - this did seem to behave strangely but did finally work (click the three dots)
Finally ensure that the item weight and dimensions are kept very high as per Rick's post, 40kg and 180cm+ etc. Do not reduce these values when you reduce the listing price otherwise the item will revert to SD. The weights and dimensions are largely irrelevant as long as they exceed whatever the highest SD service is. The only thing you need to know is that the postage value you've set under the policy will be able to cover the cost of the postal service that you will independently purchase for the item you're selling.
Simply astounding that this faff is still required almost a year after the SD policy was introduced.

They will never deliver it due to this and it takes more room so they lose on it, and if they found out it is valuable, like they did with mine, they just steal it.

·4 months agoI am saying that because like I told you the other time, and you ignored me, I sued them and have proof of this, in the meantime so many documentary, citizen advisors investigations and news about this came out in the next days, so i think there is enough public proof of this as well, no mention about the ring doorbells videos, as well, so yes, they have no problem to steal your parcel or not delivered it when big. ·1 year agoMy point is that I shouldn't have to mess around just to do something that was possible a month ago.
While I get that some people just want to list a pair of jeans by taking a couple of photos and pushing two buttons (as you do with Vinted) I don't.
I want the option to take fees and postage in to account when setting my price, not to have "Offers" on as standard and , in short, to have control over my sales.
I don't get this aggro on Etsy, but that is getting flooded by drop-shippers and resellers..... You're supposed to be selling tools and supplies, vintage or your own work.

I tried anyway with increasing the weight....got a choice of carrier options - I want Evri 120cms; choose that....changed the price and bam....it all went back to the original with medium parcel 60 cm.
What the heck are ebay playing at?!
I have three items listed....two around 120cms and one at 81cm.....as its stands I cannot offer postage on ebay.
What a farce.

you would put the price above 750
all the delivery options would appear and you select one.
change the price to what you want to sell it for but don't click out of the text box or it would update to SD
instead, click the scroll bar and scroll to the bottom of the page and hit list.
now it updates to SD without having to click out of the box so it doesn't work.

OP1 year agoWell - I have spent a couple of hours attempting to get the cash on collection option to transfer to a live listing without any luck! I have tried every which way but the system isn't having it, I wonder why the cash on collection tick box is an option - poor programming as usual I suppose.
Other than that the workaround appears to be working on a live listing.

·1 year agoPostage methods and options do not appear when I tried to sell. Cash on payment is not allowed and no postage policy option appears.
No way round it I'm afraid. Only option is business selling. Worth remembering that as a private seller one had to pay sellers fees until a few months ago so really it is just returning to the old system but without the buyer having to pay extra for the BPF.

Changed to 30kg + £760.
When I reverted the price back to £30 from £760 the weight automatically changed back to 10kg and Simple Delivery’s ugly head popped back up. 3-5 day courier disappeared.

·11 months agoI've retried this method and it must have stopped working recently as DHL now appears as a Simple Delivery option for 30kg packages which is why it switches me back to SD.
But for me, there is the now the option of choosing 'oversized' which is over 30kg. When I put the price back down the custom postage still remains

OP1 year agoThey will not block it - customer service were advising people to use my previous workaround, this will be no different. It is still patching ebay's failure to address the problem and provide the service as required.

Also it is worrying that dhl are going to be the additional way of posting as they are as bad as evri are around where I live and are expensive. Royal mail are the best but not the tracked 48 method that sd use.

I think it too much hassle and when eBay mentors/staff find out which they will when it is put on their forum they will block it as well. Better to just become a business seller then no problem with postage selection or buyers protection fee.

SD works ok for many things ie small and medium parcels or even large letters if you want them tracked
But to go business to be able to send small cheap items that aren’t on ebays allowed categories and whch are no different in price weight and size from their allowed categories or to be allowed to send large or heavy items seems like a penalty

·1 year agoI sell mainly records and some are quite valuable (100 - 2500 pounds each) and they must be sent special delivery as it guarantees next day delivery and they are insured for up to 2500 pounds. Simple delivery is no use as they are sent tracked 48 without signature. I agree that simple delivery is fine for lower value stuff but not high end. I do not run a business but have acquired these records over the last 40 years and it is time to sell them.

·1 year agoTried it quickly by selling a similar item. Changed to simple delivery as soon as I refreshed and revised the BIN price. Even without refreshing it reverted back. Also reverted to old parcel dimensions.
I don't think there is a way around it now. It worked for me up until today but no more.
Basically, if you are selling an item for less than £30 you are in effect paying around 10% for the SD label which will not be refunded despite what they report and the buyer is paying more so you can lose a sale.
