Has Custom Postage Now Gone ?

I've read that we can opt out of the Simple Delivery and still use Custom postage but I cant see the Custom Postage option anymore when adding a listing ?
I've tried this on new listings, revising a listing, listing a similar item, and on listings under £10.
Is there still a way of using Custom Postage or has it completely gone ?
Any advice appreciated.

·3 months agosome things i sell i can use my own postage price like football programmes and cds but not on books but you can get around that if they are signed in most categorise buy putting them under signed. also i have to use SD on posters

They have a bloated UI, yet postage options are hidden beneath categories and price, and you have no hope of working out why, or what triggers what options.
If their UI was decent, you wouldn't have huge threads like this on their forums!

Anyways... yes you can still have custom postage. Even Google AI lists the exact way to get it.

·5 months agoI'm trying to list some Pokémon cards worth under £10 and before I was able to select custom postage but now it only has simple delivery as an option, even when I select "sell similar" on a item that offers letter postage.

·5 months agoIndeed... The only time I used "Simple Delivery" the delivery was just standard Royal Mail, I had to turn off Evri, and I was charged significantly more (about 2 pounds more) than if I'd used my standard Royal Mail (or InPost)...
I now actively refuse to use the simple delivery and will use whatever workaround is necessary to ensure I never have to use it again.

·3 weeks agofree delivery or not ultimately the buyer pays so its their money. The saving is when an item is lost! RM gave me a book of stamps refusing to compensate for an item I sold on here because I could not provide the proof of purhase. SD refunded straight away without and chasing courier.

Whilst some can still see and use Custom Postage, if it is not now available for you, you are now under Simple Delivery postage only, Those who do have Custom Postage, some are waking up to see their postage on items automatically changed to Simple Delivery.
There's no escaping SD !

·8 months agoSimple Delivery is 'pants!!' my problem I am having is that simple delivery is setting the postage 'far to low'
I have just tried to list something that is £40 and an unusual shape which will take some careful wrapping, then there's getting to the post office which is a way off for me and simple delivery calculates the postage is £2.80!!!!! - how's that work then. I worked it out and its £4.00 postage cost to me when you factor everything in - so ebay - stuff yourself Ill not bother listing.

I just sold a bunch of old graphic novels. One buyer won two auctions. Usually I would combine P&P and pass through the savings to the buyer. However, I went to do that just to find I had no control whatsoever over delivery costs or options post auction completion. The dispatch option was the dispatch option and could not be adjusted.
I looked it up on their help pages and apparently ebay is meant to do all this automatically, but not in this case they hadn't (and from that I guess pretty much every other similar case). I could not combine the items in a single package, as ebay had capped the dispatch option for each item at 2kg as per each auction, whereas combined they were around 3.5kg so impossible to send as a single item.
I messaged the buyer my apologies noting what had happened and that ebay now has total control over delivery.
I also noticed a system message saying the buyer had sent an question re delivery (no doubt asking to combine it), but the message was being managed by ebay (and they were not going to let it through to me) - pretty ominous approach, and no doubt managed by some inevitably appalling autobot.
So, more costs and less options for sellers, and more cost and less options for buyers.
Of course, these posts will make 0 difference and we are merely venting. It is clear that ebay staff do not read (or at least action) these forum posts and are blissfully unaware (or more likely simply don't care) what a backward step they are making here for all their customers with this ridiculous policy

·10 months agoLooks like eBay are forcing us to use Simple Delivery and forcing us into buying postage from eBay. I am a stamp dealer and use Royal Mail stamps that I already have for postage so Custom Postage is what I want.
I wll investigate other ways of trading in the very near future, goodbye eBay.

·10 months agoitems (including stamps) but now it has re-appeared and I can select custom
postage at £1 again, and like you it enables me to use up old picture
stamps. So do try again in a few weeks and see if your custom postage box
appears again. It could be a glitch that is being resolved. Ebay send me
loads of useless messages about "promoting my items" etc etc but never send
out messages about problems their customers are experiencing or when they
are resolved. So you will just have to keep trying and see when your
problem gets solved, which I expect it will. Good luck

·8 months ago@sandrafirebird I'm beginning to think there is another glitch going on, but I don't know if it is you (people who want to post stamps) or me. Custom Postage comes up just fine on a desktop using Edge for stamps. A lot of people have been complaining though. Dare i suggest switch off and on again, clear cookies and my personal favourite IT fix all hack... bash the mouse quite hard on the table.....

·10 months agoJust gone to add an auction and like others can seee no way not to use ebays simple postage system. The issue I have is that the entire is flawed. For example:
1. There is no way to add any element for packaging. Quite often this can be a non-trivial cost. As a private buyer am I expected to absorb this cost? In some cases that makes the use of ebay non economic
2. There is no way to take account of insurance. The auction I am putting on is for an old watch, likely to be worth a couple of hundred points. I would there usually select one of the services that is insured or covered for those values, but ebay is preventing me from doing that.
This change is making is very difficult to use ebay as a private seller. eBay has lost its USP and with anti-private seller moves like this they are merely pushing people to those competitors.

·10 months agoI haven't sold on eBay in a long while, but have hundreds of sales in the past with 0 problems using my own postage methods.
Just came to list some things and come across this 'Simple Delivery' forced change. Absolutely horrible. Why take the options away from the seller? What's wrong with going and paying for whatever the ACTUAL postage is? Now buyers are being forced to pay minimum £2.70 for a large letter for something I could send in a small envelope for half that price, and now without the freedom of being able to offer custom tracking, signed for etc.
Seems like an easy way for buyers to deliberately NOT choose a signed for option, then try to open a case.
If this stays the same, I won't be selling anything on eBay again. Just seems like a completely needless and stupid change to force on people.

There was a great need for ebay to make more profit from the postage contracts (it's not been brought in to make life any easier or 'simpler' for sellers; it's only been introduced as an 'income stream'....)

under £10 under 100g and fit into a letter or LL and in certain eBay designated categories see list
OR , though it doesn’t work at the moment 🙄, items that are over medium parcel size

·1 year agoIt seems to me that it depends what you sell. I took someone's advice and listed my tiny coin as a postcard, it allowed 87p post. Then, having set it all up I changed the category to coins at the last second and it immediately changed the postage to £2.72p. It seems some categories like stamps and postcards allow it but others don't. If so ebay ought to state it, not cause us to wate out time finding out the hard way.

·1 year agoIf you are thinking of selling a low price item using custom postage just forget it. You'll just waste your life. I tried every way possible way to list a tiny coin at £3.50p plus basic postage and there was no way on earth that ebay was going to let me. They simply insisted that the buyer or me paid £2.72p postage which with their commission on top meant the buyer had to pay 80% more than my price for the item. Ebay promise lots but too much of it is empty promises.

·1 year agoCheck the 'Category' on one of your items that you have 'Customs postage' on.
Then check the 'Category' of an item with the Value of £10 or under that has got 'Simple Delivery' postage.
If they have different Category Titles, but are the same type of item e.g. Postcard, this may be the problem.
Try editing & changing the Category of one of your Simple Delivery adverts to see if 'Custom' postage will show again.
I had to do this for a Relative Private Account as she had used different Categories for the same type of item so was showing SD postage on 60% of the items. All are 'Custom' postage now as the items value were all under £10.

·1 year agoHad the email this morning that from the 6th August no more custom postage and all my listing's will revert to ebays simple postage from that date. I will of course end them on the 5th and that's it for me after 20 years with ebay. We should have the option to source our own local postage, support the local post office not give more money to eBay.

They must have a partnership with Royal Mail and Evri making them a few extra mill on the side.
I would recommend Vinted as the next biggest selling platform for private sellers. You can use Yodel on there and the listing system they have is quick and better imo. Even the way they handle returns is much fairer and equal.

·1 year agoFor me, Evri is cheaper in almost every category (and where Evri does not beat Yodel, Royal Mail does with their Small Parcel size). Plus Evri and Yodel are both about 5 minutes away walking, whereas Yodel is about 30 minutes away.
Yodel are also not very good in my area and I have had issues with Yodel delivering to both my storage locker location, and my work location, when both were closed. Yodel are about as incompetent as they can get so I'm glad they are not an option on eBay anymore, since there was a huge influx of Yodel users when sellers discovered Yodel was cheaper than Evri.

I'll have to become a paying seller (upgrade to a business seller) and possibly start paying fees on my listings in order to use custom postage.
What should my next step be if I want to use custom postage but pay as little as I can to do so?
I used to have a couple of items listed up which I would use for drop shipping only. I could sell a few now and then but only via Custom Postage as I didn't physically have the item.
I don't sell a tone of these items each month so I'd like to know how much it will costs to be a business seller on eBay. Is it monthly costs + fees? Or just fees added to each listing?
If any current Business Sellers can let me know that would be highly appreciated as I'm currently completely off eBay due to this implementation by eBay.

·1 year agoIf you were drop shipping, it sounds like you should be a business anyway. I can’t see why a private seller would be drop shipping.
note whether you are a private seller has nothing to do with the volume of sales. It’s to do with what you are selling. If you are buying, making or growing items specifically to sell them on, you should be a business seller.

The majority of items I currently sell are just household items and finds, although dropshipping is something I also want to pursue in the future, even in it's only in very small volume at the start.
I will have to make a seperate free account if that above is true for my household items. ☝️

Quite annoying having built up an eBay account for so many years to them start up again.
Plus logging in and out if I get back into re-selling or dropshipping will likely be highly annoying.
It seems that eBay's new decision is rather over the top and unnecessary. The other day I sold my old pair of football boots but wasn't able to give the buyer the next day delivery they wanted. Had to sort the deal on Facebook Marketplace which was a bit sketchy.
Thanks for you guidance. It cut through a lot of the misinformation out there.

·1 year agoI am still unable to list/relist postcards without the system defaulting to SIMPLE DELIVERY..
Any items weighing less than 100grams and able to fit in a letter size envelope according to eBay are exempt from SIMPLE DELIVERY.
My postcards fit this criteria …
It has been suggested there is a ….'Work Around.'..i.e. decieve the system...
Sorry but why should this be necessary... after all this New Simple idea was introduced over 3months ago...maybe get some new people to have a look at it.

·1 year agoThe workaround is not there to ' deceive the system', you are inferring something here is deceitful, which it is not. The SD system has a technical issue failure, that is, Custom Postage which should be available for the items like yours, exempt from Simple Delivery, is simply ( sorry no pun intended!) not showing.
It's not deceiving, just a link to help those like yourself , to be able to list items meanwhile whilst eBay are working how to resolve the issue, no denying they're taking their time !🙄

Collectables/ postcards and supplies/ is a category you can use and custom will come up

·1 year agoI have the same problem - they have taken away the choice, despite previously stating that it would be remain for items under £10 and so on - I have rang them and messaged their customer service, but the agents don't seem to know much more than the users and they don't take any action to reinstate the option that allows you to decide how you post off your own stuff!
I've been a private seller for 20 years and have been able to cope with sending my sold items for that long (it's hardly rocket science) - I like choice, but apparently that is now no longer a possibility??? All I am doing now is stopping selling smaller, lighter cheaper items, as well as any heavier, large items I want to sell, owing to the unnecessarily highly restrictive and higher costs Ebay impose on such things! - For example I sold an old bathroom sink the other day (on my wife's account and managed to use a parcel service that only cost me £7.19 for 25kg for the package - There are no options on so called 'simple delivery' to even post such things. The closest option (Royal Mail 20kg parcel) which would have cost about two times as much!
I guess Ebay corporate are making some money out of the postage in some deal with Royal Mail and Evri - that's all I can guess is going on?

·1 year agoThere is a documented work-around, which I used yesterday with success!
Set your item price to above £750 (which then isn't eligible for SD)
Then choose the dimensions as 21kg and 62x47x47cm (just larger than a medium parcel)
Then you can select a custom postage option (I.e. Other 48 hour courier)
Once your custom postage is selected, go back and change the price to what you want
It should still recognize as oversize for SD and keep your custom postage option!
Important for me as I have used InPost before and also occasionally FedEx (as we have a FedEx collection daily at work).

you’re doing nothing wrong in selecting large parcel for a large item which doesn’t exist in ebays universe at the moment for many things that ARE large
Eg a 2m sofa gives me a large letter and no custom option 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

·1 year agoHi. I've just contacted ebay and have been told that for private sellers, you have to use simple delivery. We have lost the custom postage option. Evri and Royal Mail are the only options and the price is set. Your only choice is who pays. There are a couple of exceptions, like overweight parcels. Very frustrating as I used to use Yodel which was cheaper than Evri & Royal Mail.

Jewellery is exempt for now and clothing accessories are optional. No idea why, but i like it.

·1 year agoThere used to be an option where you could select over 20kg and it reverted back to custom postage. Why is that option no longer there - what happens if your item is over 20kg?! Someone hasn't thought this through!!
At least Yodel isn't part of Simple Delivery, because they have caused me nothing but problems. They don't know when my storage rental is open and they don't know when my work place is open, with a work colleague having to drive to the nearest depot to pick it up !!
I still want custom postage, mainly so I can use InPost due to their price advantage. Let us choose on a per listing basis between Simple Delivery and Custom Postage, to see which is cheaper for the seller.
It's not even like eBay are doing this well (like Vinted) because, unlike Vinted, the buyer can't choose (from the available options) which service they prefer, it's just "standard tracked delivery" and whatever eBay choose is what you get!! Big regression!!!!

If it was over 20kg then you could select a custom postage option but I cannot, for the life of me, see where this option has now gone...
I'm certainly not using Simple Delivery. If I have to, I'll just set everything to collection only until I can work out how to resolve this mess!

you need to change your item category
you need to change it to stamps - thematic
this will allow you to quote ANY custom postage !
I explain clearly in the item description that I have listed as category - "stamps - thematic" because there is currently a bug in e-bay that prevents sellers from selecting their custom postage without doing this
most buyers do not look at the item category the item is listed under
the reason it works with stamps-thematics is that -bay thinks you are sending a small letter, and thus allows seller to quote a smaller postal charge than in Simple Delivery. But it ALSO allows you to quote any postal service and price, just like the good old days 😀

This may be a workaround to use again Custom Postage, if you don't mind waiting a minimum of 14 days for your payout . If you can't change the tracking, you will not have any to show delivery, and hence the wait for the payout.

·1 year agoI didn't offer that workaround just repeating another poster's suggestion of that workaround, and my answer was, IF it works, seems it doesn't, there's then also a long wait for the payout, as the tracking will not correspond to SD tracking.
There's no successful workaround for skipping SD , it's mandatory, and here to stay .😑

·1 year agoSorry, can anyone confirm if you send out and don't use the paid for simple delivery label, you will still get paid for your item after 14 days ? My biggest concern was if you ignored the label and it wasn't used, tracking would show no movement and ebay would assume no delivery, then automatically refund the buyer, leaving the seller out of pocket!

·1 year agoYou will be paid, it's a minimum of 14 days, as other factors come into play , such as if you are a new or returning seller , if it's an item say a little different from the usual that you are selling, or one of greater value than usual, then your payout could be held longer, 30 days, but you will be paid !

·1 year agoI have always chosen my own courier for the reason that if I sell an item say a set of bicycle forks for example they are large, larger than Ever are will to accept and valuable at potentially £200 - £300 so I need to use Royal Mail Parcel Force Tracked 48 to give the proof of signature plus the insurance cover for damage or loss.
So how is the Simple Postage system going to provide that level of cover for large expensive items when it seems to think everything is under £10 in value and weighs less than a kilo. Somebody at eBay has clearly not thought this through !!

·1 year agoFrom what I gathered, eBay will cover your package from damage or loss for its full value when you use the appropriate Simple Postage service, i.e. according to the weight and size of the item. So if you had a small item that you would have normally sent Royal Mail Special Delivery for £6+, it would cost about £3 via Simple Postage and eBay would cover its full value. I have no idea how the claims process will be though.

·1 year agoYes, I fully agree, i post fishing rods and now the custom choose your own postage option has gone it is impossible to find an option to post them.
Like you i use Parcel force and can't post with the over ride of just over £5! it cost's at least £11 to post.
Ebay worked fine but they have gone completely crazy and messed everything up.
They used to have a system where a buyer from abroad contacted you for a postage cost then you sent them an invoice so they could pay, they have got rid of that to.
I think they will find there will be a mass exodus from ebay and they will lose all of their custom
and they won't come back.

didnt put in any size dimensions
it defaulted to oversized postage, and custom options for yodel parcelforce and evri

·1 year agoWhat price was the item you were trying to list.
Currently, it seems that the custom option is there if the item is under £10, over and it's SD only.
(By 'currently' I mean today - as SD stuff seems to change daily :()

·1 year agoHas anyone confirmed what the situation is? I was able to use custom postage just the other day but it's now gone from the app and desktop browser interfaces.
I need to use the "Letter" service, which costs 87p, but the first option is "Large Letter", which costs £2.70.
I tried changing from "Collection Only" to "Postage Only", but the Custom Postage option didn't appear as others have said it did for them.

·1 year agoThere are certain categories that default to custom postage eg”postcard”
if you use that as your item title and then “continue without match” it will come up as 87p
Then change it to whatever category you’re selling /amend title
of course to use custom your item must be under £10 and under 100g and letter size
(not sure if you can get away with large letter, try it and see)

·1 year agoYou've helped me see the source of the issue: my item is above £10.
I had no idea the item must be below £10 to qualify for Custom Postage. I don't understand why this is, because several items I plan to sell (PS1 games, some without the case) are worth above £10 and below £20, and cost £1-2 less than £2.70 to post.
I suppose I could not purchase the postage via eBay and do it directly from the post office instead, since I may have quite a few items in this price and postage range.
