Handling Buyer Cancellations After Payment: Strategies and Experiences
Hey everyone,
I’ve noticed a growing trend where buyers cancel their orders within just a few hours of the payment being received, and I’m curious to hear about your experiences and strategies in dealing with this. How do you manage these situations? Do you have any specific processes or policies in place to handle cancellations efficiently? How do these cancellations affect your inventory management and customer service approach?
Looking forward to your insights!

·Sep 3, 2026 at 7:57 PMDon't they only have a 24 hour window in which to cancel the order? My advice would be to wait until that time has elapsed before packing or printing the shipping label. And only say in your listings that you take 2 days to dispatch, not 1 day or same day, if that's possible.

If it is read to go out the door, we advise we can’t cancel.

OP4 days agoAi completely changed what I had written !
im a private seller 2 items in 3 days have been bought packed and postage pain only to be cancelled a few hours later. ebay need to do something about this. Im out of pocket for the postage until its repaid , I spend time boxing the items and printing labels. surely there should be a restocking fee applied to cancelled orders say 15% to cover the messing around and being out of pocket for the postage. If I refuse the cancellation and send the item they will just make up excuses to return it which I will have to pay the postage both way. this is very unfair to a private seller.

·4 days agoRestocking fees are illegal in the UK.
But I get your point. It is unfair, but it’s not a scenario exclusive to ebay. And there is little any site could do about it.

OP4 days agoif restocking fee are illegal then the buyer should get a strike at least 3 strings and a six month bad. this has got to be stopped or private seller will stop using ebay. vinted have the best idea, if something has to be returned the buyer has to pay the postage both ways, this at least make them thing twice about paying for something and they cannot cancel an order after payment. that system would work.

·4 days agoThe thing is - they are at the end of the day a request. What would you ban them for? The seller doesn't have to accept. I get that there is then a chance the buyer will then open an item not as described case leaving you on the hook for the return postage - but you could at least then report them for misuse of the return policy.
Have to say on the business side - when we do have instances of customers cancelling and we are unable to - we don't tend to get false return requests - they either open a genuine remorse return or they just keep the item.
