eBay charges
Summary: otuatail inquired about current eBay selling fees and was curious about free listings and percentage charges. jonatjonatjonat explained the concept of the Buyer Protection Fee, a new charge for buyers, and broke down how it affects total costs, while tressygirl provided a link for more detailed information. papso22 clarified that selling on a free listing option incurs no charges for private sellers, emphasizing that the protection fee applies to buyers. The discussion addressed concerns regarding how fees are calculated and displayed on listings, with participants highlighting eBay’s breakdown of costs for both sellers and buyers.

I have a samsung galaxy A40 in mint condidtion as I kept it in a leather holder also which will be given with it. So I would like to know what eBay charge these days.

·3 days agoI asked Google "advice for new eBay sellers" and it created a list that included a link to eBay's "tips for sellers". There have been many changes so you need to read it all carefully.

OP3 days ago · EditedI would like to keep this simple and just pay ebay but, this buyer protection should have nothing to do with me as a seller should it. It's the buyer who is asking for protection.
I am wondering what or who is this protection for? I have home insurance against damage or crime. Am I protecting myself from a buyer here?
For example. If you type in galaxy A40 now, you will see a phone £58.99. Where is there any mention of the cost the buyer pays in addition to the £58.99? If I was a buyer, I would not expect to pay any more than £58.99.

·3 days ago · EditedYou can read what the buyer gets in return for the buyer protection fee by putting that into the help search box, or use the link in this thread.
The price on a listing always includes the BPF, which is itemised under the total price the buyer will pay for the item. Postage is charged separately.

·3 days agoYou seem to be over complicating it yourself.
You list
As you list eBay indicate what the buyer protection fee will be
The live listing will show the full price the buyer will pay
In the checkout it is itemised to indicate the split
Based on your payment holds you will receive for the sale what you wanted for the item, less any additional fees you may apply (for advertising etc)

·5 days agoJust to keep this simple. There are no charges to a private seller for selling something via one of the free listing options and to someone in the UK.
Since you last sold, ebay has introduced the buyer protection fee, which is a charge to buyers.
They have also introduced simple delivery through which, depending on seller choice, either the buyer or seller pays ebay directly for the postage.

OP5 days ago · EditedLets take my phone and asume the buyer pays £40. This looks like the eBay costs are 10p for flat rate plus £1.60 (4%) total £1.70

·5 days agojust read this page
In short though…
When purchasing from UK-based private sellers, the Buyer Protection fee is calculated as:
A flat fee of £0.10 per item, and
7% of the item price up to £20, and
4% of any portion of the item price from £20 to £300, and
2% of any portion of the item price from £300 to £4,000
There is a cap on the total fee amount you'll ever pay. Any portion of the item price over £4,000 will not incur any additional fee. When purchasing multiple quantities within a listing, the flat fee is only charged once.
So a phone that you want £40 for, eBay will add on a buyer protection fee of £2.30 I believe. The buyer will see a listing price of £42.30 + postage.

OP5 days ago · Editedbuyer protection fee? The way I had it they took about 3% of the money taken. Are you saying that I pay ebay for protection and the buyer pays ebay instead of the seller me?
Sounds like the amount is fixed and not a percentage of the final amount.

·5 days agoAs a private seller, you don’t pay fees.
But you should look up the buyer protection fee. This is a fee added on top of what you choose you want to receive for the item. The buyer pays this direct to eBay.
Postage for private sellers is normally simple delivery. If you list as buyer pays, you also won’t have any costs for postage.
