Hi everyone,I wanted to start a discussion about the reality of Promoted Listings and what feels like a total lack of transparency regarding how traffic is being distributed these days.I started my business on eBay 10 years ago. Back then, if you had good metrics, solid pricing, and excellent service, the organic search algorithm rewarded you. Five to seven years ago, we were comfortably turning over £600–£800 a day. Today, despite having significantly more inventory listed, we are barely hitting £200 a day.When Promoted Listings was first introduced, we were happy to participate. We set our rates at a reasonable 2% to 5%. For months, the split made sense: about 50% of our orders came organically, and 50% came via ads. It felt like a fair tool for an extra boost.The Shift to "Pay-to-Play"Last year, I started digging deeper into our metrics after noticing a terrifying trend: 99% of our orders were suddenly being labeled as coming from Promoted Listings.To test this, I did something drastic—I turned off Promoted Listings entirely.Guess what? The orders didn't stop. They kept coming in. But it opened my eyes to the serious lack of transparency regarding how eBay attributes these fees. With the current attribution rules, if a customer clicks your sponsored ad, a 30-day cookie window opens. Even if that same buyer completely bypasses the ads days later and buys from you through a purely organic search route, eBay still hits you with the ad fee.Is Organic Traffic Being Artificially Starved?My biggest worry is that eBay's algorithm is slowly killing off genuine organic traffic to force sellers into an aggressive, paid ecosystem. It feels like they are prioritizing short-term ad revenue over the health of long-term marketplace sellers.When you compound final value fees, ad fees, and the pressure to cover "free" shipping out of our own pockets, the profit margins are getting entirely crushed.Between eBay ads, Amazon ads, and Google shopping, is this just the depressing new norm of e-commerce?
