Unable to choose postage
Summary: paulr4640 expressed frustration about eBay's postage system, which defaults to "simple delivery" for new listings, preventing them from selecting Royal Mail and setting their own postage rates. They also encountered issues marking an item as sent because they used Royal Mail instead of eBay's prepaid postage labels. jonatjonatjonat clarified that simple delivery is mandatory for most private sellers and discussed the limitations on custom postage. Another participant provided a helpful link, suggesting paulr4640 contact eBay for further assistance. Lastly, cheekychippy210 highlighted the benefits of selling on the platform.
Can anyone tell me why, when listing a new item, the postage always defaults to simple delivery? I find I am unable to change this to Royal Mail and choose my postage option & charge. Almost everything I sell goes into an envelope, yet Ebay want to charge the buyer over £2.70 and has no facility to change this to a 2nd Class letter (I charge 95p).
On another note, I sold a mobile phone, posted it using Royal Mails postage (not ebays prepaid labels) and it won't let me mark it as sent, as ebay wanted me to use their postage label. I sent the buyer the tracking number and a short video of it going into a parcel box, and asked him to leave positive feedback once he was happy with it and acknowledge he'd received it.

OP1 month agoThanks for the link. It appears I may have to contact eBay as anything I sell (most items) under £20 still defaults to custom.

·1 month agoSuggest you read up on Simple Delivery.
It’s now mostly mandatory for private sellers. Custom postage is available on items under £20, under 100g, large letter size or less and in mysterious applicable categories (though I though stamps was one)
You also can’t update a tracking number if you don’t use the simple delivery label. In this event your payment will be delayed and if the buyer did claim an item didn’t arrive you could only then add the relevant tracking number to the case.

OP1 month agoCustom postage for items under £20 isn't or doesn't show as an option for me as a private seller. If I opt to sell a similar item that has normal Royal Mail postage on for under £20, it immediately defaults to custom postage with no option to change. It's so bloody ridiculous and annoying.
