Hi, I am trying to purchase royal mail postage through eBay but when I click purchase postage label I get this message "Something went wrong and we were not able to generate the label" is there a problem or am I doing something wrong?

Uploaded some items yesterday (09/08/2026) sold one today and still unable to generate labels...
Come on ebay, this is ludicrous... I had countless phonecalls/messages with tech team/helpdesk/customer services and its still unresolved...

·3 months agoThis has happened to me for months. I stopped listing on ebay for those reason.
I was told months ago that it was being worked on so would soon be resolved.
I tentatively listed a couple of items recently.
Sold one yesterday (postage via RM), Lo and behold, the same message - something went wrong and we were unable to generate the label.
This is very very poor service from Ebay, and yet they wonder why so many 'sellers' are now using other platforms to sell, or ,withdraw from online selling altogether.
I have been listing on ebay for over 20 years but never so little as in the previous months!
So sad to see such a once thriving, and customer supportive platform reduced to a place where their 'sellers' seem to matter so little to them 🫤

·10 months agoI'm having exactly the same problem. I had an order yesterday - Simple Delivery EVRI. When I tried to order the label I got the message:
Something went wrong and we were not able to generate the label.
I have tried ordering in both Chrome and Firefox and on my iPhone and get the same issue.
I reported the issue to CS yesterday (23.10.25) - they said it would take 3 to 3 days to resolve.
I had another order this morning and had the same problem again - reported to CS and they suggested refunding the postage but I declined because that does not resolve the issue which will only happen again. They've forwarded my issue to a specialist but I'm surprised to see that this is not a new issue but an issue that's been intermittent for sometime. What makes this infuriating is we are tied into Simple Delivery - there is no option to avoid this!!

·1 year agoIve had this issue 4 times the last month and its appeared agin. Each time I’m having to explain to support what the issue. That’s a 30 minute conversation each time convincing them it’s an eBay issue. Clearly support haven’t a clue this glitch is an exists or how to fix it. Some time they resolve it right away. Sometimes it takes days and I have to buy labels else manually with RM. This thread is over a year old and there is still no fix.

Apparently if you import your orders ****into parcel2go which you can only do if you haven’t clicked on get label / got the label
You can send your own way through them
i dont know if you can then add tracking because
I read that to add tracking when you don’t use SD , you must already have got a label but not used it
and then ask for a refund for the eBay label
you need to register with parcel2go and use smart send and link your eBay account there
You get the normal courier and Royal Mail rates
whenever you get a sale it registers on there, so you don’t actually have to do anything
****so I didn’t mean you have to import anything

·1 year agoWhen you are on the “get prepaid label page” click on the little arrow to the right and you can see the customers address. (iOS eBay) I use this for my own labels and just copy and paste, but yeah really frustrating at the moment you can’t just go to the normal post office, buy your own postage and upload the tracking number yourself like the good old days!!!

I am unable to generate postage labels for items sold earlier today - still not working several hours later.
I also could not take the items to the Post Office to buy postage there as eBay will not give me the buyer's address, as I am forced to use the stupidly named 'Simple' Delivery - probably because eBay make a commission on this.
I promise Same Day Dispatch on my sales. I failed to honour that on today's sales. If this isn't fixed by tomorrow morning I will miss the Saturday collection time at my local Post Office and it will be Monday, at the earliest before I can dispatch the items.
Make delivery Simple again - bring back the old system and allow sellers to use their own delivery service, outside of the forced eBay partners, if required..!

·1 year agoStill happening! I listed an item today selecting only evri as courier and someone has bought a pre paid label for Royal Mail which I can’t generate ! I wouldn’t mind but I’m making sure I don’t have Royal Mail as an option so why are buyers still able to buy ? Plus it’s not even the correct postage price as the person has paid for large letter and it’s clothing!

It appears to be an intermittent issue that happens with not being able to generate the labels. Tech continue to work on resolving it. With regards to receiving a Royal Mail label when Evri is the preference set. In certain circumstances we will provide you with a label for a carrier you haven't selected. For example, if your package exceeds your preferred carrier's package limits. If you use the recommended label by eBay and if the sizing is incorrect the carrier should still accept it as any costs incurred will be taken care of by eBay.

Considering that it has been over 2 months since I reported my issue, the tech team are clearly not working on this otherwise it would have been fixed already. I find it impossible to believe that fixing a bug which prevents the generation of a label could take this long if someone were actually actively working on it.

Unfortunately it seems as though reporting it to the tech team has no effect. Apparently my issue was reported multiple times to the tech team and yet they never did anything about it - even though I was told a few times "I've escalated this and the tech team should unblock your order in the next 24 hours". I had to post it externally myself.
There appears to be a complete disconnect between the tech team and the customer facing teams with no one able to really say what the problem is or how it is being addressed. For some reason this issue doesn't appear to be treated as important by the tech team picking up service tickets.
Simple delivery seems so flaky that it's just not worth using ebay any more. It shouldn't be that difficult to post something you've sold.

·1 year agoAbsolutely agree with this. I've been selling on ebay since 2010 (this is my UK account), and I've never had any issues like this. UK's "simple delivery" system is anything but simple and it's incredibly cumbersome and frustrating to be forced into it as a private seller.
I'd rather sell on the US ebay site than have to deal with simple delivery.

I made sure my simple delivery options was evri only - no problems generating Evri labels but today sold something and buyer has been able to select Royal Mail! Have had to cancel order because I can’t send as no label or QR code can be generated my end. I checked and evri is the only courier selected on my preferences so eBay have overridden this.

In certain circumstances with Simple Delivery there may be cases where eBay are unable to honour your courier selection, for example because of the weight of your item. If this happens, you may be provided a label for a courier you've excluded. This is likely what happened with your recent order.
Do you have recent examples of where the label is not generating so we can report to tech?

I'm still getting the same error, also for another order placed just yesterday. ebay CS weren't able to generate a label/QR for me so I've had to post the items using my own label, which makes this order marked as "overdue" for dispatch since simple delivery frustratingly won't let me add my own tracking number-
Essentially, I can't make any sales with simple delivery listings, the same error message pops up no matter which device or browser I'm using. CS is just repeatedly telling me to use Chrome incognito which does not work, neither does the app.

·1 year agoHi Kat, not sure as it was just two lightweight t shirts, I don’t think the size of weight was the reason. As regards not being able to generate Royal Mail labels this has been a problem for me since last year - well before simple delivery began. I used to be able to buy them and then suddenly I started getting the error code so I switched to buying the Evri labels from then on. I hoped once simple delivery started the glitch would be sorted but it’s still the same. I’ve tried different browsers cleared cookies etc but nothing works. It’s so strange that Evri labels and codes are fine.

It's amazing that this is still ongoing. I'm currently unable to get a label and it just says 'something went wrong'. I don't even have any way of getting the buyer's address, so I can't send via an alternative even if I wanted to.
I've raised to an agent and they just said that IT will 'look into it and let me know'. What am I meant to do in the meantime?
It looks like this is a known issue that has been ongoing for months now and still no proper resolution. eBay is basically unusable for sellers if you don't know if you'll actually be able to post what you sell.

The issue can be intermittent . Some users have found refreshing the page or clearing cache and cookies has resolved it so you can try these options.

·9 months agoI am having exactly the same issue, can’t generate labels for any orders, be it simple delivery or custom orders. Get the same message as other users, tried on different browsers, devices, the app, nothing works. Got orders that are late to be dispatched and some very unhappy customers.
How is this still an issue a year on from when users first reported the problem? and why does eBay not enable sellers to cancel prepaid label and arrange their own delivery until such time as the system is working properly?
Customer service knows nothing about this and can’t even see a fault their end, and I’ve been told it could take 72 hours to get a resolution, however based on this thread users have been waiting far longer. Can we please get an urgent update and fix, if not a permanent resolution at least allow us to arrange our own delivery in the meantime.

·1 year ago"Something went wrong and we were not able to generate the label" This is the exact error message, this is the 5th time this has happened, sometimes we can't get any labels printed because of it, other days we get through 15/20 then it starts giving the error. What is the issue with bays system? Can we get this resolved already?! My employee can't get through shipping and we are stuck purchasing labels on pirate ship massively slowing us down and costing us time and money with our employee on top of having to pay it out of pocket every time, this is ridiculous! 8 years on ebay and ive never seen issues like this!

·1 year agoThink Kat may be on a day off today, but this is an issue many are experiencing today.
It seems to be a Royal Mail issue.
RM Click and Drop business domain is different to the retail site. The retail site is still working.
I assume ebay gets their labels generated via the business domain.
RM own C+D service checker claims the site is working correctly, but the website page shows it as down.

·1 year agoRoyal Mail's Click & Drop website is down and has been for several hours at least. I last used it on Friday morning but at 8:30 this morning it was down.
Unfortunately this website has been a pain over the last couple of months so it is anyone's guess when it will be up and running again. It's a case of trying it every hour or so.

·11 months agoThis is not a solution. I have refereshed pages. Logged out and in, switched to FireFox, switched to many other broswers, used VPN, on both mobile and desktop and I keep getting the same error. Reading the messages on ebay community this problem seems to have been going on for quite some times now and ebay doesn't seem to care about it at all, while they have tied the sellers to their own shipping arrangement. It's a disrespectful to both sellers and the buyers. I have contacted ebay five times and they dont tell me exactly what the problem is and when it will be resolved. Very disappointing. I respect my customers more than ebay respecting their community and I will post their items at my own cost. But it is scary how ebay has been treating their community.

The original report on this thread was resolved. However it is an intermittent issue that has occurred again. There is a current open ticket with tech for it. I will add your account to it and once they confirm the fix I will update the thread. I understand the frustration with it and it is being worked on between eBay and the courier site to resolve as soon as possible.

·11 months agoThis has been going on for many months now and worse, seems the issue returns every now and then. eBay should at least make sure sellers have other options for postage, if their system doesn't work. Sellers are locked into ebay system, which has proven to be unreliable. It is not about sellers or buyers frustration; it is about a functionality that is fundmental to the whole ebay website. They should be more worried about this than the sellers or buyers.

·4 months agoThis thread was started nearly 18 months ago those issues with the labels were probably different to those being experienced by many today.
Royal Mail and Parcelforce have advised they are having technical issues, and to try again a little later on.
For once not eBay's fault ! 🤗

·4 months agoits hapenning with the evri and in post aswell so i would say its an ebay issue as the likelihood that all couriers are having issues at the same time and saying ebay isnt at fault is wrong as i can print labels from all 3 outside ebay just not on the ebay system itself
