Simple Delivery compensation
Summary: The discussion focuses on challenges faced by both sellers and buyers in navigating shipping systems, particularly on platforms like eBay which have been losing market share to more straightforward sites like Vinted and Facebook Marketplace. martinyoungman expresses frustration over unexpected costs associated with postage and the inability to claim certain fees, highlighting the complexity of postal compensation policies. sml192 provides a solution by explaining the refund processes for different postage payment options and clarifies coverage terms for loss or damage. The conversation underscores the need for clearer communication regarding compensation and postage rules to prevent confusion and financial risks for sellers.
Just to say that I only used once, so far so good.
However, some items I sell are more than £200, and I don't I feel comfortable using just Royal Mail 24 or 28.
After double checking with eBay's CS, I was told that:
*Royal Mail Special Delivery isn't provided.
*if a parcel is lost or damaged, the courier will cover it all if via Simply Delivery.
It sounds too good to be truth, coz in that case, I don't need to use Special Delivery and there's no need to worry for some worse case scenarios. However, I still have doubts because I asked 2 CS persons to send me the link of T&C. They promised and yet didn't. I found it a bit tricky, because even RM Special Delivery only covers £2000 or £2500 at maxium. Some luxury items, say a Rolex or Hermes would pass the limit easily.
Does anyone know where I can find this T&C?
Thanks.

·1 month agoI think the truth is , it's difficult for both the sellers and the buyers to navigate this system
and ebay has brought these changes in as they've been losing market share to other resale sites.
Until they update their postage setup to communicate what compensation is / if available etc it becomes a guessing game and cus service will tell you , you need to look at T and C.
Go to vinted /FB market place etc and its simple and clear , where compensation lies and postage rules etc.
I paid out of my own money to post an item as nothing indicated the simple delivery I attached to the listing has compensation attached (I was expecting to pay the extra myself) and its risky when you have £200 items. Now i found out i can't claim the postage fee the customer paid, even tough customer confirmed receipt and there is no place to void the postage label / select use my own?

·1 month agoAs it was listed with 'Buyer Pays Postage' then it is the buyer who will be refunded for the unused label, which should happen automatically within 30 days. You can only request a refund yourself if you list with 'Seller Pays Postage' which you would need to do manually here.
The Simple Delivery terms state quite clearly that you are covered for the full sale price for eligible items in the event of loss or damage in transit.

jonatjonatjonat
·3 months agoYes - because they expect you to use the label. Going on your recent sales, you would have had to fill in a form on every sale to get a refund of the unused label. If the customer paid for delivery separately, they will get a refund in 30 days.
but, you are yet another seller who is a business trading incorrectly on a private account. You are aware if you upgraded, you could charge whatever you wanted for postage and not have this hassle.

·10 months agoDon't think of it as Royal Mail 24 or 48, as that's not the service being provided.
Although the actual parcel handling is done by RM & Evri under a bulk contract with eBay, the Simple Delivery service and cover for loss or damage is provided entirely by eBay themselves - eBay are effectively the courier.
RM or Evri insurance limits are completely irrelevant, as the parcel carrier does not provide any service to you directly, or cover any loss or damage.
All of the useful information is in the FAQs on the page below. There's also a link to the legal t&c, but the important bits make reference to the current prices etc., which are in the FAQs. Watch out for items which are not covered, or are exempt from Simple Delivery.

·6 months agoWhy should we have to find the T&Cs to understand the compensation process? Go to any large courier and it's very clear when you are checking out how much the item is covered for using the service that you have chosen. eBay need to make this clear in the Simple Delivery pages and process when purchasing the delivery label. They are deliberately doing this to try and avoiding paying out claims.
realspark
·6 months agoSurely the basics are made clear when you list your item? When you select Simple Delivery, there is a "how it works" link that displays a pop up telling you that your item is fully covered for loss or damage, and that eBay will take care of any claims without your intervention.
I'm not sure how they could make it any clearer?
niceprice777
·10 months agoRelated experience. If you read the T&Cs they promise that so long as you take eBay's "recommended" option for size and weight then, if it is over, you will never have to pay more (so long as the carrier can actually move that size and weight, fair enough). However, on the get your label screen post sale it warns that if you do not stay within size and weight then you may have to pay more. So I do not trust it. I sold a DVD boxset 2 weeks ago, it was an oversized item because it had a collectable statue in it. eBay had only labelled me for a regular box set and Royal Mail max 16cms depth (don't get me started on that, btw!!) was never going to work. I looked for a lable upgrade option to go bigger, there wasn't one. So I called eBay customer services (reached an agent in the Caribbean, so not sure how much they know about intricacies of UK Simple Delivery regards Royal Mail?). Because of the conflicting info he couldn't promise me that there would not be penalty charges so I panicked, no option than to cancel the label, request a refund (under his guidance), and get on-line to buy a Yodel lable (at full retail price), there is no way to buy another lable via eBay even if you cancel the first. Long story short, Yodel took a couple of days longer that RM 48 hrs would have been and, even though I had updated the tracking details to Yodel, 5 days after the item was delivered and 5 days after my customer (thankfully) left pos feedback, eBay out of the blue takes my funds back (!!!) and refunds the buyer!!!! They were then zero help at getting my money paid back to me again and left me to ask the buyer to kindly PayPal it to me again which, luckily, they were prepared to do but, maybe, I don't want to have to share my personal email address with people I have just met, in order to fix eBays mess?

·10 months agoI believe we may have the option to choose our own postage again now.
Perhaps you could in future take an extra moment when listing to remove RM
from the choices if is not going to work, or at least put the dimensions in
the listing so the ebaybot chooses Yodel as the cheapest.
I am aware it takes extra time but worth it to avoid hassle.
realspark
·10 months agoYou will not be charged extra if you leave the package size and weight at eBay's recommended. If you do change it yourself and you select undersize or weight, eBay reserve the right to charge the seller you the extra it should have cost, plus £1 admin fee. This is clearly stated in the T&C.
You would have been absolutely fine posting it with RM.
The Post Office will accept (and RM will deliver) anything up to 20Kg and 61x46x46cm - there is no size or weight stated on the Simple Delivery label.

·1 year agopersonally i find the simple delivery a much better system. the whole listing task now is the quickest its been, load photos, description and a few boxes to tick. Three goods had delivery issues and providing the buyer opens a case the money is refunded. I always tick box for both couriers and buyer pays, select parcel size and weight and thats it. Goods sell print label and send. This for me this is the best ebay has been. I'm not a business, private seller, clearing late Mum's estate, me being her carer for last 15yrs, and my hoardings from years as I have to move.

·1 year agoI am sure that it works for many people. I only offer Royal Mail as I do not have an Evri drop off close by and I am not driving several miles to drop of an item that someone has paid £10 for. This creates issues with oversized parcels (>61cm) which is not an issue with Evri. Also, I used to add a little to the cost of postage to cover actual packing materials etc. but again, if you are happy to swallow those costs then it works for you.

·1 year agopostage was wrong and under ebay's new rules you cannot change it, so you
need to cancel the sale and then re-advertise following the ** paragraph
below. The buyer can then buy with confidence, paying the correct postage.
If the postage is a lot more, then the buyer may not wish to go ahead.
OR you can just get the appropriate postage label at your own expense and
send the parcel with the new label. You lose money, but hopefully only this
once.
First time they put us on to 'simples' we got away with it, as it were and
it cost ebay a fortune to sort out accurate postage labels.
Which is why they went back to giving us options for a while.
But now, after plenty of warning, we are back on 'simples' (which, by the
way I hate anyway) apparently you have had plenty of time to correct your
listings to cater for the new system.
The auto change to the postage you originally put on is not at all
guaranteed to be correct. I found quite a few correct, others obviously
wrong, both under and over priced. EG a car mirror was put down as a large
letter!
**To avoid any further problems you need to put correct sizes (just small,
medium, large parcel or letter not accurate dims) and weights (1kg,2kg,5kg
etc) in your listing.
It is a pain, takes a while but as you have pointed out, ebay are no longer
prepared to take the knocks so you do need to do this. Or stop using ebay,
as some private sellers have.
angelline-kimono
·1 year agoYes I totally agree. I used to add £1 onto the postage to go towards packaging, printing, paper, driving to the P.O., parking etc. Now there is nothing.
Coupled with having had to reduce my item prices, a bit to cope with the fees that the buyer now has to pay, it does all make it very difficult to make any margin.

·1 year agoEBay don’t give a toss about private sellers. They rely on the fact they have a monopolistic position and private sellers have little choice but to suffer their abuse. I love the way that eBay try to “sell” simple postage as a benefit when in reality I lose money on every package I send.

·1 year agoof the service fee.
I object to being forced to use 'simple postage' when I have been managing
normal postage options for years and have good feedback to show buyers like
most of us.
My listings have already been changed to simple delivery with postage time
2 days. Whilst I often do this, or better, it does not allow any leeway for
unforeseen circumstances, like caring for someone or being unwell or on
holiday. I find the maximum allowed is now 3 days and it has taken me over
half an hour to change them.
NB if you use the multi edit system, the original details remain, so I am
confused as to what the buyers see.
I also noticed some anomalous postage prices so i will have to go back
through everything to check those.
They seem to think you can post a large ceramic bowl for under £3, whilst a
cotton shirt is costing over £4, so that is hardly going to sell!
Don't know how long I am staying with ebay, it is currently a great deal of
work for poor reward and most of my items are for charity.

Royal Mail have often been very good about compensating for lost or damaged parcels.

OP1 year agoI actually called eBay twice last week to double check the SD compensation limit.
You might already have this experience already: eBay's CS is generally bad, and they would give different reponses each time. I was told that 'SD will be compulsory', but' the seller can always have advanced options'. I felt confused, so I said 'how can I have other options if SD will become compulsory?' The CS replied 'you can choose not to use it(SD).' 🤔
Therefore I think what the CS wanted to say was SD will be the default setting, and sellers always can opt it out. And it seems it's been proved, as I just tried to list an item after Apr.7 Cali time, and I could opt SD out.

OP1 year agoOk. I just contacted eBay again. According this CS person:
*Right now is just the test version. Their IT is working on it. The final version will come out on 14th.
*For listing over £750, 'switch to the advance options' will show up, so sellers use their own methods.
*If sellers don't want to use SD, they can click on 'collection only', and then change to 'postage only', so the 'custome postage' will show. Then we can do it the old way. However, I found this very confusing. It's not user friendly, and what's the point to make something mandatory and then say that there're other options?

In all honesty if they include the postal options I need in simple delivery like 'Royal Mail small packet 48 tracked' and special delivery for higher value items over £150 then I am quite happy to use it.
If they don't have these normal and usual options, then I guess I will reluctantly jump through whatever hoops there are to get to the custom choices.

·1 year agoThis thread started about ebay compensation and has gone on to the problems people have had with Royal mail claims.
Just for the record. I have pretty much exclusively used Royal Mail small packet tracked 48 for the last few years. This is the package size that ebay is not including in their simple delivery at present.
My parcels mostly arrive on time or early, the very few that have been lost or stolen (probably 4 out of many hundreds) have all be paid back by Royal Mail through their online claims procedure within the stated time and with no problems at all. Obviously I must have been lucky but basically I have had no problems with Royal Mail at all.
Now the issue surely is whether Ebay will send appropriate compensation once the 'simple delivery' postage is compulsory.
And whether they will include the small packet size in their options!!!

·1 year agoThis is why so many people refuse to use EvriParcelNicked, because there's literally nothing that someone can send with them, that doesn't (or couldn't) be talked out of compensation. There are so many loopholes with the EvriParcelNicked Terms & Conditions, that it'd be quicker if they simply told you what you CAN send with them!
Honestly, if Simple Delivery goes ahead, in a forced manner from mid-April as is planned, then there's going to be:
1 - A lot of eBay Private Sellers who will simply NOT use eBay anymore, and will go elsewhere, and
2 - A lot of claims for non-receipt/damaged goods that eBay are going to be having to compensate for!
Regardless, I'm NOT going to be helping eBay get rich (!) by cosying-up to the worst UK delivery company on the planet!

·1 year agoPeople had better get their weights right new rules today and pray that none asks for a return
"You also acknowledge and agree that should the buyer request a return, you may be responsible for refunding the buyer any outbound delivery costs (including for express delivery) for the label provided to you, and that the outbound delivery costs will be deducted from your account to execute the refund. In the event that you declare the size and weight of your item at listing, you will be responsible for ensuring you declare this correctly. Should we find that you have under declared the size or weight of your item and additional delivery costs are due to eBay, the additional delivery costs (including any applicable administration or other fees) will be deducted from your account and paid to eBay."

·1 year agoSo true. Even when in the past I have sent items by evri which I am very entitled to send they have argued the toss so much. In the end I told them to get stuffed, contacted the CEO office and got ,h money back, had to do that around 3 times for different items but it worked, solved within a couple of days of me contacting the CEO office. They are cowboys beyond belief, they care not 1 iota for customers, treat their items with such disregard and disrespect

·1 year agoHi,
eBay needs to clarify its Simple Delivery statement - Get full coverage for your items - with regard to its term and condition small print that also requires adherence to the couriers’ policies. For example Evri has a policy/term and condition (T&C) of no compensation for lost or damaged items in a very extensive Non-Compensation Items list. The eBay Simple Delivery statement of Get full coverage for your items is clearly contradicted by relevant policy/T&C small print and therefore without this clarification it must be view as grossly misleading.
