Verify Bank Account message?
Thought this was an email scam but the message is in my Ebay messages, it says I need to verify my bank account. I'm confused as its the same bank account I've always used on Ebay so why am I being asked to verify it? Anyway, I clicked the the message to see what came up and its telling me to sign into my bank via a link on Ebay, surely that's not a safe thing to do? Can anyone put my mind at rest that I'm not giving all my bank details away to some online scam?

Hi @theregoesatenner , thanks for your post.
I've just checked for you, and this is definitely legit.
Your bank details have been added, but they haven't been verified yet. This is a normal procedure all sellers on site have to complete at some stage in order to be in compliance with our policies, but mainly to be in compliance with local laws and regulation. You can see more about it here.
I know it can be concerning, and you're good to double check before doing anything, but I can confirm to you that this is completely safe and you have nothing to worry about.
To do this, you don't necessarily have to log in directly with your bank if you are not comfortable enough with it. If you scroll down, below the log in option, you will 2 other options (request microdeposits and/or verify with a bank statement). The log in option is definitely the quickest, while the microdeposits option might take up to 5 business days as you will have to wait for them to be sent into your bank account, and then enter them in your eBay account to verify your bank account on file. You can also click to upload the bank statement, but since it has some personal information on it, people tend to go for the microdeposits option. However, to reiterate what I've said above, all options are completely safe, and it is entirely up to you which option you want to go for.
Hope this helps,
Marco

OP1 month ago · EditedThank you for your detailed reply. Still a bit mystified why after probably twenty years an Ebay member I'm only now being asked to verify.
I've just tried by signing in directly to my bank but the account registered on Ebay that I always have my payments go to doesn't even come up as an option just my current account shows along with my creditcard account. I've never had any problems with payments from Ebay going into my registered account before so it all seems rather odd. I'm assuming the only way round this is to change the account registered on Ebay then verify that account?
Update, for anyone else in the same boat, I changed the bank account registered on ebay and verified, so hopefully now sorted.
I have however now received an email from Ebay thanking me for setting up a direct debit! have no idea what that's about.

Thanks for your reply, @theregoesatenner .
I understand what you mean, but again, all sellers have to go through this at some point. If this is only happening to you now, there might be a number of reasons as to why this is only happening now, the main one being that now eBay processes all payments after parting ways with PayPal. Since eBay are no longer processing payments, we started asking sellers for this since this was verified via PayPal before, and not through eBay. However, this is just one example.
Re the direct debit, you probably selected your bank account as your selling costs payment method as well, when this happens, if you owe fees or refunds, we will be taking the outstanding amount from there, that's probably why you're seeing the direct debit notification.
Please note that you don't need to do any of this, if you don't wish to. However, if you don't you might be able to sell on site as you won't be able to pay and get paid for transactions.
Thank you,
Marco
