Why is VAT added to my accepted eBay offer?
Summary: red-mars is seeking clarification on why an additional VAT charge was applied to an accepted eBay offer for an item listed in the UK. They argue that eBay's VAT policy should include VAT in the listed price and not add it at checkout. *vyolla* explains that since the seller is located in India, import VAT is applied even though the item is shipped within the UK. fargvs adds that import VAT can be charged if either the buyer or seller's account was initially registered outside the UK. papso22 mentions eBay may not respond directly to such queries in the forum. Lastly, *vyolla* notes that they were not charged additional VAT when testing the checkout process themselves.
I would like to ask eBay to clarify the VAT calculation on item number 357922721475.
The item is listed as being located in Rugby, United Kingdom, with free delivery to my UK address.
The seller sent me an offer of £34.22, which I accepted. However, at checkout eBay is adding £6.84 VAT, making the total £41.06.
The £6.84 is exactly 20% of the £34.22 offer price.
I was not clearly informed when accepting the £34.22 offer that an additional £6.84 VAT would be added.
I have checked eBay's VAT policy, which states that prices on eBay.co.uk are displayed inclusive of UK VAT. It also states that when VAT is the seller's responsibility, VAT should be included in the listing price and should not be added to the final price after the buyer has purchased the item.
Could you please confirm why £6.84 VAT is being added separately in this particular transaction?
If eBay is collecting this VAT because the seller is classified as a non-UK business, despite the item being located in Rugby, please explain why the seller is classified this way.
Otherwise, please confirm whether the £34.22 accepted offer should already be VAT-inclusive.
Item number: 357922721475
I would appreciate clarification before I make the payment.

Mentor1 month agoInteresting, if I add that bag to my basket and go through eBay checkout right up to the point of paying I'm not being charged any extra VAT.

Mentor1 month agoEven if an item is located within the UK , if either the Buyer and/or Seller is using or has had an account that has/was initially registered outside the UK site , then an additional 20% Import VAT (or various applicable Country rate Import VAT) and any additional Customs /delivery fee is charged ---
