What do the 4-character codes after the product description mean?
Summary: pawyl_40 searched for the Sony IMX290 Starlight camera and noticed that listings included 4-character codes at the end, which suggests different variants. They expressed concern about the European Article Numbers (EANs) provided, as these numbers are unregistered and differ among sellers, potentially indicating fake listings. They noted that these numbers might falsely suggest authenticity on platforms like eBay.
So I searched for IMX290 which is a (supposed) SONY Starlight camera and all of the listings had 4-character codes at the end. What do these mean please?
As you can see they all have these 4-character codes at the end which suggests they are different variants of the IMX290.
There is another thing too - The EAN number (European Article Number) is not registered at all and is different for each of these sellers.
AI could not find these EAN numbers in any database, which of course, suggests they are all fake numbers and possibly fake products.
It would be easy for Ebay to check these numbers in the official database but presumably they are used to add 'authenticity' to the listing.

Mentor1 month agoLooks like a seller specific stock code. Many high-volume eBay sellers append a short code to the end of every title so they can quickly identify the exact item, shelf location, supplier, or listing template. These codes are for the seller's benefit and generally mean nothing to buyers.
