VAT restriction due to wrong item location (UK instead of Italy) — overseas dropshipper, how to resolve?”
Summary: preshy-90 is seeking advice on resolving a restriction on their eBay.co.uk business account. The restriction is due to eBay's request for a UK VAT number, but as an overseas seller based in Italy using dropshipping, preshy-90 believes eBay should handle VAT according to HMRC rules. They discovered some listings incorrectly showed the item location as the UK instead of Italy and are unable to edit these while restricted. They are asking if others have faced similar issues and how they might resolve them.
Hi everyone, hoping someone has dealt with this before. My eBay.co.uk business account got restricted from selling because eBay says my VAT info is invalid/missing (they want a UK VAT number via HMRC). I’m an overseas seller based in Italy, and my products ship directly from suppliers outside the UK (dropshipping), with order values generally under £135.
I understand that under HMRC’s “deemed supplier” rule, in this situation eBay itself should be responsible for VAT, not me — but eBay support hasn’t confirmed this applies to me yet. I also found that some of my listings had “item location” set to United Kingdom instead of my actual location (Italy), which I’ve now flagged to them, but I can’t correct it myself because the system blocks edits while restricted.
Has anyone experienced this exact issue — wrong item location triggering a VAT restriction as an overseas dropshipper? How did you get it resolved, and roughly how long did it take?
Thanks in advance!
