Uploading NI number
I am not a professional seller, however in 2025 I sold 33 items because of a family bereavement and have more to seel this calendar year.
HMRC say this figure/amount is within a calendar year and I have more to sell. I completed an online questionaire about my selling with HMRC, how much I had been paid etc and have confirmation that I do NOT need to declare.
I pay tax and my bank accounts are visible to HMRC so tax will have been included in the amount I have recently paid.
However I will not upload my NI on Ebay or any other selling or similar websites. Easy cloning with NI number and so many warnings about fraud.
Has anyone else hade the same experience....this is not about payments withheld

Mentor6 months agoIf you haven't got any held payments and are no longer selling and don't wish to, then that's fine, you could still leave your account open for buying.
However, if eBay have asked for your number and you won't provide it then they may need to let HMRC know. We don't know what the process is here.

·6 months agoAll sellers who reach the threshold of 30 items or about £1740 in sales are asked for their NI number.
You seem to have two concerns. One regardiing any tax liability and one regarding the safety aspect of disclosing your NINO.
Supplying your NI number does not mean you have to complete a self-assessment. If you are simply selling your own items, there won't be any tax to pay. However, Ebay does have to send details of your sales to HMRC - whether or not you supply your NINO.
Of course you do not have to give you NINO to Ebay but, as far as they are concerned, you can supply it or stop selling on Ebay. The choice is yours.

No concern about HMRC. My tax affairs are all in order and they confirmed I have no tax liability with my Ebay sales. It was only about uploading the NI number, to easy to have identity cloned.
HMRC say those numbers are per calendar year.
No problem, no more selling on Ebay!

You did say you sold 33 items in 2025, so, more than 30 items in a calendar year.
So, Ebay asked for your NINO, because you sold 33 items in a year.
