Unusable phone number for login authorization
Summary: davidninetynine has experienced login issues with eBay after switching their internet from FTTC to FTTP and receiving a suspicious phone number to call, which seems unresponsive. They are concerned it may be a scam or an error by eBay. **peaseblossom** and tommystrezures suggest trying alternative methods to contact eBay and verify the phone number. davidninetynine expresses frustration with eBay, considering leaving after their landline is cut off, despite some bids still active on items.
My internet connection has just been converted from FTTC to FTTP and I am now having trouble signing in to ebay.
It tells me I am using a different computer (I'm not) and instead of the usual captcha page (with crappy low resolution pictures that take several attempts to get right), it's giving me a London phone number to call and a code number to give them. Screenshot below.
Calling the number gives a recorded announcement (American female) giving two options - either accept or deny their T&C's regarding recording the call and how they use the recording.
Selecting either of these results in the same thing - persistent music on hold and no facility to give them the necessary code.
The only way I can get into ebay is by using the old copper connection, which will be cut off in a couple of weeks.
What's going on? Is this a scam, has ebay been hacked, or is it just another complete ***-up by their ever more useless system engineers?

OP1 week ago · EditedOh well, looks like I will be permanently off ebay soon, after 23 years.
Another of their regular buyers gone... but the good news it that it will save me some money, and a lot of frustration at the dreadful "user experience" that the site has turned into in recent years!

Mentor1 week agoHave you tired clearing your cache and cookies and perhaps if you use chrome try signing in in the incognito mode. The number flags as Colt Technology Service. not ebay.

Yes, that's one of the reasons it looks very suspicious and a possible scam. And given that the recorded announcement is very obviously American, the London number is quite likely to have been faked / redirected.
Or it could simply be that ebay have put up the wrong number to call...

OP1 week ago · EditedMy change to FTTP also involved a change of ISP (weirdly, the old one doesn't work with City Fibre who have already cabled up my street) so that's probably what has made the difference.
And another strange thing - after logging in over the landline and old ISP, I can swap the computer over to the fibre modem and ebay still works.
I should also add that I have a couple of bids in on items for sale, and I may not be able to complete the purchases if this doesn't get fixed...

Mentor1 week ago · EditedTo be honest it shouldn't make a blind bit of difference whether your ffibre internet is is on FTTP or FTTC to the cabinet. I would be very inclined to think that that is a spam message of sorts. I do not recollect when we switched 7 years ago to FTTP with our provider ever seeing anything of that nature.
EDIT: You could change your phone number to a mobile one. Then its much easier?

There's a note added to the top of this page:
Locked - Discussion interactions are currently paused.
Which may be why nobody has replied.
I strongly suspect this phone call message is a scam, and I will probably get charged a premium rate for the time I spend listening to the horrible Music On Hold.
My landline will be switched off in a week or two, after which it will be impossible for me to log into ebay or ask for help here.
The entire UK phone system is being converted to FTTP, so it's likely that a lot of other users will be having the same problem sooner or later ...
Can one of the moderators here look into it?

Mentor1 week agoThe locked message seems to appear at random but replies are not blocked. I think no one has anwered because no one knows the answer. If you google that phone number it does appear to be ebay but various posts have said they never get through to anyone.
You will have to try to speak to ebay but that is hard these days. Click on help at the top of a page, select a subject then type in "speak to agent". Keep repeating until you get through. Try in the morning if possible. Best of luck.
