Trying to help my father
Summary: meliamelo sought assistance for their father's eBay account issue caused by a suspicious login notification and subsequent login problems. They mentioned difficulties in receiving customer support to resolve the issue because eBay insisted on speaking directly to the account holder, who has hearing difficulties. Several participants advised checking the correct account name and emphasized the importance of using the eBay ID rather than just the email. meliamelo discovered that the main problem was attempting to log in with an email instead of the eBay ID, and planned to resolve the situation by retrieving the username.
Hi I was wondering if I could get some help. My father is hard of hearing so I called ebay on his behalf about an issue with his account after speaking to the chatbot. After waiting on hold for an hour within a few minutes the ebay representative hung up on me after insisting on speaking to my dad who can't hear him.
The issue is, my father got an email from ebay a few days ago about a suspicious log in so I changed his password for him and it was fine. Today it says the account doesn't exist so I can't reset the password but when I try to use the email to make a new account it says the email is in use. His phone number that was linked to his account isn't. The representative asked for it so I gave it to him before he hung up. I can't reset the password and I can't get on his account at all. Is there anything else I can do to help him or is his account lost forever? I really don't want to call them again only to get hung up on.
Edit: My dad was trying to log into his ebay with his only email address. I'm sure ebay generated him a username but he doesn't remember picking it. You can only sign in through google for example but you can't type your email address into the log in bar. I'm going to sit with him today and help him try to remember his username but he's been using his ebay for so long he probably did used to use his email to log in before usernames were introduced? I'm not sure about the specifics but thank you to the answers I got for not making me feel stupid about this, it was difficult recognising what the problem was in the first place and I just really wanted to help him. Not much else I can do if he doesn't remember his username.

Mentor1 month agoGo to the eBay log in page and make sure that the eBay account name showing in the first field is the correct account name. Carefully type it in. If it's pre-filled then triple check that is the correct account name.
Then add the correct password (presumably the new one you changed it to) in the password field.

OP1 month agoHe logs in with his email and doesn't know his ebay ID or account name because he uses his email to sign in. It won't accept his email any more so I can't reset the password again. It says his account doesn't exist. But when I try to use it to create a new account it says his account exists already but prompts me to do nothing about it. So he can't log in to his account at all.

Mentor1 month agoTry to find some reference (probably in his emails) that features his eBay ID.

OP1 month agothank you, we haven't been able to find it but this is the problem solved

Mentor1 month agoHow did you solve it?

OP1 month agoWe've been trying to log into his account with only his email address but he needs his username to log in. It says his email is taken because its taken by his username. I had no clue that you could only sign in with a username and not an email address (typing it into the log in bar) because I use the app. I'm going to sit down with him later and get him to remember his username. I was able to change his password through his email so I didn't need his username for that. This is probably why the ebay rep laughed and hung up on me

Mentor1 month ago · EditedAh, great, glad that he's back up and running. Nothing is easy these days! Thanks for the update.
Our eBay usernames stay the same unless we change them i.e. yours is meliamelo.

Mentor1 month ago · EditedIt does not help trying to see what if any suggestions can be made without being able to see the account.
Just for information an email can only be used for one account, and even if account is closed the email cannot be used again.
Use this to see if the account can be found. https://pages.ebay.com/services/forum/feedback-login.html

Mentor1 month ago · EditedThat is a big problem then. Logging in with an email can create a brand new account which may have happened here.
If he was just a buyer and so there is no money in his account being held by ebay he nay be better off starting from scratch with a new account and username.

Mentor1 month agoCS are correct, they can only speak to account holder.
We all get these messages at times that a device has logged in or different location, as long as you are sure your father is sure it was him logged in at the time, ignore it.
He should be able to log in to his original account.

OP1 month agoThe problem is when he logs in with his details it says his account doesn't exist so he's not able to log in to his own account.
