Toxic plastics

I recently purchased Tupperware items from eBay. After looking into this product, I have found the following info:
Potential dangers of Tupperware and plastic containers include the leaching of endocrine-disrupting chemicals like BPA and phthalates into food, especially when heated, damaged, or used for fatty/acidic items. These chemicals are linked to hormonal imbalances, reproductive issues, and increased risk of certain cancers. Old, scratched, or vintage plastic poses higher risks of chemical leakage and bacterial growth.

- Chemical Leaching: Plastics can leach harmful compounds, including Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, which can disrupt the endocrine system, causing hormonal imbalances and reproductive issues.

Mentor6 months agoThis has been known about for years. I'd never microwave plastic, nor would I use it to freeze any kind of acidic (a pasta sauce with tomato, for example) product. It's just common sense, really. It's vital to consider how your food may be contaminated by modern storage products or cooking utensils.

Mentor6 months agoThis is not new news of Tupperware, which has been sold since the forties!
Some never use it, I have found it brilliant for storing items, take away picnic items, never had a problem.
It is NOT micro wave able, I'm sure some toxin would emanate if one went against those rules and placed it in a microwave!

Tupperware specifically states that its products are BPA free.
What you have discovered isn't new - the potential for plastic products to leach chemicals or release microplastics has been well documented for years, especially when heated or abraded. Tupperware itself is not claimed to be microwave-safe unless explicitly labeled with a microwave symbol.
My advice would be simply to use common sense: avoid cheap, unbranded bargains, buy reputable, established brand products which comply with safety standards and try not to expose products to excessive heat or abrasion. Or if you're someone who is troubled by the possibility of even low-level risks, stick to glass, ceramic or stainless steel containers.
