Starting selling as a business
Summary: traveler070 is considering converting their established personal eBay account to a business account after their new business account was suspended without any sales or listings. They are seeking advice on how to proceed without risking further suspensions. john1297576 suggests that the previous account suspension might have been due to lack of activity and warns that converting the personal account could lead to similar issues, while also forfeiting the benefits of a private account for personal sales.
I have an established personal eBay account that I have used for several years to buy and sell personal items, and it has always remained in good standing. Around six months ago, I created a separate eBay business account, but it was permanently suspended shortly after creation for “activity that we believe was putting the eBay community at risk”, despite having no sales or listings.
I run a legitimate UK business and would like to start selling my products on eBay. Rather than creating another new account, I am considering converting my established personal account to a business account. Given the previous suspension, I want to make sure I approach this correctly and don't inadvertently breach eBay's policies or put my existing account at risk. Has anyone been in a similar situation, and what would be the safest way to proceed?
Thank you for all your help

MentorSep 8, 2026 at 9:57 AMYou do say that the previous account had “no sales or listings” which could be why it was suspended.
Ebay tend to use standard messages, which rarely fit the circumstances, instead of explaining the problem.
Converting your private account would keep your feedback, but lose you the benefits of a private account for private sales, and also risk another suspension without explanation.

OPSep 8, 2026 at 10:14 AMThank you. That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid, another suspension. All the previous account did was buy a couple of postal bags - to package items for shipping. Hardly something that puts the community at risk.
This time rather than starting a new business account I thought it might be better to convert my private account. I've had my private account since 2013 with no issues whatsoever.
And trying to speak to a person at eBay to help me ensure I don't make any mistakes has proven impossible.
