Shady buyer claiming not to have received Catalytic converters
So I sold a pair of Catalytic converters in a straightforward sale. I sent them immediately, on the same day, by next-day delivery using Evri. The item was delivered to a "safe place" at 5 pm the following day, a Friday, and all seem good.
Fast forward to 5 pm on Monday, the buyer who buys, sells, and melts these forms of metals claims not to have received it. Did you contact Evri? I asked. Neighbours, the Police? No, it was left outside and is now lost. Refund me, now! He then escalated it to eBay and lost. Let's move on, shall we?
I then get another email 10 days later from him asking for my name and address, as he now intends to pursue it through the courts. Go away and leave me alone, I responded. So, 10 minutes later, I received an Item delivered with items missing from ebay demanding that I accept the return and provide a Return label. What!? 10 minutes ago, he was claiming it was lost, now he wants to return it - return what exactly?
My guess is he'll either send me totally different items and argue the toss, or simply use my info from the return label to sue me through the courts.
What would you do in the situation, folks? It seems very odd, and the buyer is abusive and aggressive.

OP5 months agoTo close this case down, the buyer got a refund. eBay paid. I'm convinced it was a scam, but I guess I haven't been directly impacted; we all have.
What have I learned from the experience? Nothing really. If a buyer is intent on scamming, they'll scam. eBay has a few blind spots that they need to review. If a package has been delivered to a "safe place" - his "brother's address" and the seller claims that it has been stolen after a few days, and eBay adjudicated in favour of the seller, the buyer shouldn't be allowed to open another case claiming "missing parts" without evidencing that they've actually received the item for parts to be missing from it. The buyer simply gamed the system.
99.99% of buyers are honest. A few aren't, but it doesn't mean the whole platform is rubbish - it's not. Had I lost out, I'd have put it down to experience and gone again.

You've been very lucky. It isn't clear how eBay came to pay.
If you used simple delivery eBay would have paid if the item had not been delivered, but they apparently refused his original claim for item not received.
When an item previously reported as undelivered arrives, the buyer can sometimes still open a case if it's not as described. But the seller would normally pay.
eBay may actually have made a mistake here, unless they treated this as a no fault refund at their own expense.

If he sends something back other than what you sent, there are things you can do. Come back here immediately if that happens.
If he uses the label to get your address and sue, he will find that as a private seller your responsibility ends when you hand the item to the courier.
