Seller is responsible for all buyer returns
Summary: elmwild expresses frustration over eBay's policy requiring sellers to cover return postage costs even when buyers make mistakes in ordering. They highlight concerns about costs and potential misuse by buyers who may order multiple items casually, knowing the return costs are covered. elmwild compares this to some companies in the clothing sector making buyers pay for returns and questions why eBay is not following this trend. 61stephenuk shares a link to an eBay announcement regarding the return policy update.
I have just experienced listing a new item on Ebay and was unable to list unless I agreed to cover buyer's return postage costs, including when they make a mistake by ordering wrong item. Why??? In addition to the extra cost to me, this will mean all original packaging will be removed, if they have attempted to fit the item. So now, if a buyer is unsure which item will fit their caravan, they know that they can order two, or even more, different sizes, remove all packaging and try to fit them with impunity, safe in the knowledge that the seller will pick up the tab for all returns. Ludicrous!!
I understand that some companies, particularly in the clothing sector, are now making buyers pay return the return postage because it is costing them a significant amount to offer free returns. Why is Ebay going in the opposite direction? If buyers make a mistake they should take some responsibility for their error. I fully acknowledge that sellers should be responsible for return postage if the item is not as described or damaged.
