Seller has lied about a defective game I've sold and I can't decline the return?
Summary: up_cycle_ride expressed frustration with eBay's return policy, as they had to accept a return for an Xbox 360 game that the buyer incorrectly claimed as defective. A participant confirmed that up_cycle_ride would need to accept the return and issue a label, or alternatively, issue a refund without requiring the game to be returned.
Hi, I've chatted to the automated eBay chat bot, but it's clear to me that regardless of your returns policy a buyer can always return an item even if there's nothing wrong with the game. In this case I sold an Xbox 360 game thats not backwards compatible, and the buyer tried it on a newer Xbox and it doesn't play on it because it's not backwards compatible and nowhere on my losing have I stated that it is. He says the game is defective/not compatible. He even claimed his console is a 360, yet he sent a screenshot of an Xbox one/series X. Am I just going to have to accept this return as I'm not protected from nitwits like this?

That's true, except that it isn't "our policy", it's eBay's.
In all but name eBay now gives buyers a 30 day trial period in which they can return an item for any alleged fault, real or invented. The seller is also made responsible for the cost of delivery both ways.
Sellers can appeal the decision, but only after the buyer has been refunded. As eBay never sees the item concerns and usually takes the buyer's word against the seller's the procedure is heavily biased against the seller.
This is just one of the many risks that sellers accept in eBay's user agreement.
