Seller cancelled sale after auction as not happy with final bid price

So i have just won an auction for a bicycle that was running for 5 days.

After the auction (that had no reserve and a low starting bid) had concluded I recurved a measly from the seller to say he would not complete the sale as he was not satisfied with the final bid amount.
I have had the automated “Pay now” notification from EBay at the same time as a message form the seller to say dont bother paying, im not selling the bicycle for that amount so will just relist it again.
I looked at his feedback And it seems he has a track record of doing exactly the same thing. I am caught between paying for the item to then have it returned OR not pay for it and have EBay register a non payment against me? Below are the crashes back and forth:

“Yes I will be cancelling, please by all means leave all bad publicity you feel necessary” That’s pointless but very disappointing. FYI my max did was higher than it sold for but ultimatly things sell for and are only worth what people will pay. Anything more is late wishfull thinking

Thanks for letting me know. There are several others advertised/listed of the same spec for considerably less than that (inc Di2) so will bid accordingly. Unfortunately my max bid of yours was lass than £1000. I assume based upon your general feedback that you will wait till after the auction then cancel the purchase if it does not reach that sort of figure. Will wait to hear from you later.

Why not just have a reserve or a starting price that your happy with?

Yes I’m afraid as the feedback suggests, I will not be selling the bike for less than I see a reasonable price I’m afraid

Well im still the high bidder on your auction however as my max bid is less than your offline buy it now price are you likely to honour the wining bid if its lower?
I only ask as your last three lots of feedback suggest you won't and if I know I'm wasting my time I will retract my bid and bid on another bike that the seller will actually complete the sale.
Sorry of the message and question but as you can imagine its a waste of time bidding if the chances of the final auction price reaching your BIN price are slim to none considering what bikes of this year are selling for.

ALERT- NEVER DEAL WITH THIS GUY. Did the same to me as others before me. You win a bid, he makes excuses for weeks not to post as he didn’t get enough for the time, then you get a refund as eBay won’t do anything about these type of sellers. DON’T USE HIM

Bad experience with this seller.. After winning the bid and paying for the item, a little while later I received a notification that a refund had been implemented. On checking, this seller had given a fake reason for refund. There was no contact from this seller at all since winning his auction. This is not how you are supposed to conduct business on this platform... Reported this seller to Ebay !. ( I have waited a while to post this feedback following submitting a report to Ebay)

Id avoid at all cost - once I won the auction they cancelled straight away, I messaged the and they responded with “I got offered more” not really how a auction works. Awful seller

Mentor1 week ago · EditedYou can report them to ebay as a non-performing seller. Sometimes they act and suspend the account, but often they don't. Obviously they cannot force a seller to sell to you. If the seller cancels the transactions the need to pay is removed. If you have paid a refund is issued.

OP1 week agoThank you for your reply. Its sad and disappointing that EBay now allow this sort of thing. Looking at his feedback he has a track record of doing this and EBay turning a blind eye and the only way for me to leave feedback is to pay.

Mentor1 week agoJust be aware if you don’t pay he could cancel the order with buyer didn’t pay which would put a defect on your account.
