Seller accidentally posted me something apparently
Summary: danny1595 shared a situation where a seller contacted them about receiving an unintended item due to an eBay shipping label error. They expressed concerns about potential scams and the difficulty of contacting eBay directly. tressygirl advised waiting to see if an item arrives and clarified that danny1595 should not incur return costs. tobiasd4 suggested opening a case if the item wasn't ordered. Despite danny1595 having successfully received a previous purchase, the discussion focused on whether this incident could indeed be a scam or an error. papso22 suggested that the seller might be misrepresenting the situation.
I have had a seller contact me telling me he has sent me an item by accident. Apparently he has contacted ebay by phone and has asked me to do the same. I'm not aware of an item having been sent to me as I'm not at home to check, but from what I understand it was ebays mistake. Apparently they have the seller the wrong shipping label to print and the seller didn't notice. What happens in this case? Will ebay refund the original buyer and compensate the seller if I haven't got the item? I'm also curious to know what would happen if the seller told ebay I didn't return the item even if I did. The seller would possibly get compensation and also get the item back, but I would be out of pocket having to post it back with postage costs and travel. Is there any possibility of this being a scam?

OP1 month agoOk thanks everyone for the replies. I appreciate it

OP1 month agoFor context, I purchased an item from the seller a couple of weeks ago and it turned up ok. Somehow he is saying that ebay has provided him with the wrong label. I can't contact ebay directly because of their ridiculous AI chat bot. It blocks access to agents at every turn and makes it impossible to get direct answers.

Mentor1 month agoSo the item you bought from this seller, arrived OK?
What is this second incorrect label the seller is quoting here? Have you made another purchase from them ?

OP1 month agoI only made one purchase from the seller and it arrived ok. The seller has apparently sent me another item that I didn't purchase, saying that ebay messed up by providing him with the wrong shipping label. He has then contacted me telling me about the mistake, saying he contacted ebay by phone and telling me I should do the same. Ebay is impossible to contact. I won't be home for a while to check if the item is there, but if it is what happens? Do I send it back then the seller still claims compensation from ebay because it was their mistake? Do I keep the item because ebay will compensate the seller. Obviously there are legal and moral things to consider,

Mentor1 month agoNo eBay will not compensate them for their mistake, the seller has made the error here.
You do not have to contact eBay here, and if it is not another purchase from this seller you cannot open a case.
Message the seller once it arrives they will need to forward payment or postage for a tracked return postage for you, to send the item back to them.
You are not obliged to of course, as the seller has made the error here, nice to send it back( if it arrives!), just do not incur any postage costs.
Of course if the seller was wise and had their name and address on the back of the item, once received, you can write on the package, ' Unknown' please return to sender, address on back.

OP1 month agoIf the seller is correct in what they're saying, the mistake was ebays for providing the incorrect postage label. Not sure how this could happen though, but stranger things have happened

Mentor1 month agoThe seller is making that up.

Mentor1 month agoI can't see ebay supplying incorrect postage label.
If you receive an item that is not what you bought, then open item not as described case, seller provides returns label, you post back for full refund.
Escalate on day 4 if no label or refund.
Ignore seller excuses.

Mentor1 month agoYes there is a possibility of a scam.
eBay would only send a label to a delivery address you have on your eBay account for a seller to send items to you.
You do not have to call eBay, just wait and see if any item turns up, if it does you are not responsible for the return cost either.
Have you made any recent eBay purchases?

OP1 month agoYes I made one from the seller recently which turned up ok
